UK Prime Minister, Theresa May backs South Africa's controversial land reform policy

"The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) urges the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Theresa May, to use her state visit to Nigeria to uncover the dismal state of our nation by resisting a choreographed plan by the Buhari Presidency to hoodwink her for an endorsement stunt", it said.

And Mrs May also pledged a "fundamental shift" in aid spending to focus on long-term economic and security challenges rather than short-term poverty reduction.

Commenting on Mabey's involvement on the trip, prime minister Theresa May said: "Mabey's proud history of a commitment to quality, combined with its strengths in innovation, make it a brilliant example of the world-renowned expertise which British businesses have to offer".

Britain was South Africa's 6th largest global trading partner a year ago, with total trade at 79.5 billion rand ($5.6 billion), the South African president's office said. Her only previous trip to the continent was a visit to Tunisia in 2015 in the aftermath of the Sousse hotel terror attack.

The Prime Minister on Thursday is expected in Nairobi, where she will meet President Uhuru Kenyatta and see British soldiers training troops from Kenya and other African countries in the techniques needed to identify and destroy improvised explosive devices before they go to fight Al-Shabaab in Somalia.

Mrs May will travel to Abuja, the capital of Nigeria - Britain's second largest trading partner in Africa - for talks with President Buhari.

The President told the visiting Prime Minister that Europe and China were already conducting an in-depth study on recharging the Lake through inter-basin transfer from the Central African Republic.

Mrs May's trip - which will see her meet the presidents of all three countries - aims to deepen economic and trade ties with growing African economies ahead of Britain leaving the European Union in 2019.

Theresa May is preparing to fly to Africa on a three-nation trade mission in an attempt to bolster Britain's post-Brexit fortunes.

In a speech in Cape Town, May said she wanted Britain to become the biggest investor in Africa out of the Group of Seven nations, overtaking the United States, by using the aid budget to help British companies invest on the continent. "I will be talking about it with him later", May said. "Importing to Africa can involve a good deal of bureaucracy as well as complex tariff and non-tariff trade barriers, which tend to stifle growth".

"I also thank you very much for the improvement in trade relationship between us since you assumed office". Both countries are former British colonies.

"We are ready to cooperate together on global and regional issues; to strengthen that cooperation and partnership, I have with me a business delegation, as we look to enhance our ties in future and explore more trading opportunities".
