Derby defeat shows long road still ahead of Gerrard to catch Celtic

Celtic 1 Rangers 0 Ntcham inflicts Gerrard's first Rangers defeat

Frustrated Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has confirmed he is set to sign Northern Ireland worldwide Gareth McAuley to shore up his defence following yesterday's Old Firm defeat to Celtic.

Gerrard, who expects to sign Northern Ireland defender Gareth McAuley when he returns from global duty, said: "For me it is a foul and it is also a foul for the fourth official".

"For me it's a foul - and the fourth official is shouting it's a foul", he said. He has swept his legs.

"The referee has ignored that advice - he doesn't think it's a foul - but for me it's a blatant foul although they've gone on the counter-attack and scored a great goal. I have seen it again five times and it is a foul".

Gerrard insists he seen enough from his side to give him encouragement. He added: 'We played against a team who have been together for two years and they have a lot more experience.

"They know how to win, we know they are a good team but I see enough today to feel if we can get bodies back and new signings up to speed, I believe we can be a match for Celtic certainly in the next fixture". It was also Goldson's first taste of a Glasgow derby, but he was surprised at how close the teams were as Celtic recorded a 1-0 win.

The Hoops managed nine attempts on target to their opponents' two and struck the woodwork on four occasions. "We were the dominant team from start to finish", he said. He was denied a goal just after the restart when Rangers keeper Allan McGregor parried his rasping effort onto the crossbar but there was never going to be any doubt when James Forrest laid it on a plate for him to score the opener shortly after.

'It was an outstanding win for us and a very good performance.' Gers boss Steven Gerrard felt Ryan Jack was fouled in the build-up to Celtic's victor but Rodgers disagreed. "If there's one thing I'll be it's honest and Allan was lucky". What is most important is the referee, Willie was right on the spot so he sees it.

McGregor then took full advantage of his reprieve to paw away Odsonne Edouard's back-post header as the visitors withstood intense pressure to somehow go into the break level.

The days leading up to this game were dominated by the Moussa Dembele will he-won't he saga, but the Frenchman's absence left no significant void for Celtic to fill yesterday.

He said: 'The whole episode was disappointing. "I am not just saying that".

'He was clear and categorically said "no".

Asked whether he was looking forward to having another opportunity to test his theory Celtic aren't as good as he was expecting, he smiled and said: "I think I need a rest".
