Kavanaugh Hearing Interrupted by Protesters, Dems Call for DELAY — COURT CHAOS

Kavanaugh set to begin confirmation hearings

Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation hearing continues Wednesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Watch the hearing live.

The contentious eight-hour Senate Judiciary Committee meeting was punctuated by dozens of interruptions by opposition Democrats and protesters as Judge Brett Kavanaugh sat stone-faced during the proceedings. They are concerned his confirmation would tip the balance of the Court firmly to the right.

Democrats seized on Kavanaugh's comments in which he supported an expansion of a USA president's immunity from prosecution - a dramatic shift from his recommendation for strong action against then-president Bill Clinton when Kavanaugh assisted in a 1990s investigation against him. He has served for the past 12 years on the appeals court in Washington, DC.

"To me, Justice Kennedy is a mentor, a friend, and a hero".

"My mom taught me that judges don't deal in abstract theories; they decide real cases for real people in the real world", Kavanaugh said.

"I'd like to be recognized", she declared.

Kavanaugh said the Supreme Court "must never be viewed as a partisan institution", but Tuesday's hearings suggested that moment had long passed.

Several protesters also disrupted Sen. They said that could affect such issues as gun control, abortion and immigration. Dianne Feinstein of California, the panel's senior Democrat. "We have not had an opportunity to review, or read or analyze", she said. Although Senate Repulicans did ask for documents from Kavanaugh's time in the White House counsel, the Democrats weren't satisfied.

"You can't lose the election and pick judges", Graham told his Democrat colleagues.

President Trump weighed in on the hearing Tuesday, saying that it was a display of how "angry. the other side is". They said they fear he may rule against a woman's right to choose whether to have an abortion.

That's far more than for any previous Supreme Court nominee, but millions of pages have been withheld. The remark was notable because the nine justices on the Supreme Court can act like nine separate law firms. But Senate Democrats came out with guns blazing on Tuesday morning, speaking over Judiciary Committee chairman Chuck Grassley's introduction to demand that the hearing be adjourned until they could thoroughly vet documents related to the judge's time in the George W. Bush administration, which had only been released the night before. The White House cited executive privilege for keeping some of the documents under wraps. Orrin G. Hatch, who's voted on every current member of the Supreme Court and most of the judges sitting on federal circuits as well. Vermont Sen. Patrick Leahy asked. Kamala Harris, D-Calif. Ted Cruz (R-Texas). Mike Crapo, R-Idaho, as committee Democrats pushed repeatedly to postpone the hearing.

"Their motives are clear", said Sen.

Durbin also questioned Kavanaugh's credibility.

Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing has been riddled with frequent outbursts from the gallery, leading to multiple ejections and arrests.

Judge Kavanaugh took a more nuanced position. "If you are going to hold others accountable for their words, you should be held accountable for your own words". He was also part of the legal team that investigated then-President Bill Clinton in the late 1990s.

"Is this president, or any president, above the law?"

"And it's that president who has decided you are his man".

Speaking on CNN, Mr Guttenberg said: "I simply said, 'Hi, my name is Fred Guttenberg, I'm the father of Jaime Guttenberg, who was murdered in Parkland".
