Britain to continue contact with European Union members for Brexit deal: PM

Theresa May

The union says Britons voted to leave the EU, but they "did not vote for economic chaos or to put jobs and hard-won rights on the line", and voters should be able to accept or reject the final Brexit deal.

The pro-Brexit Tory Sir Christopher Chope warned Raab against "self-delusion", while the committee's chair, Hilary Benn, claimed that there had been an "emphatic rejection" of the Chequers deal by the European commission.

General Secretary Tim Roache said that while the union respected the 2016 Brexit vote, the reality facing people now was very different from what they were promised during the campaign.

Asked if he thought the Chequers deal was in tatters, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said: "It sounds like it is and it sounds like Boris Johnson, having spent two years as Foreign Secretary, has achieved nothing and now says it's all off".

Johnson resigned his post in July after disagreeing with May's Brexit vision, meaning he is now an influential figure on the backbenches of the governing Conservative Party.

Raab added that a no-deal scenario would bring some countervailing opportunities, such as Britain's ability to lower tariffs and bring into effect new free trade deals, straight away.

He added: "People voted for change - they voted to take back control".

Best for Britain chief executive Eloise Todd said: "This is compelling evidence as to why we need to stop and think again".

British Prime Minister Theresa May has said she would not allow compromises to her Brexit strategy that went against the national interest, seeking to allay fears among some in her Conservative Party that she will cave in to Brussels' demands in negotiations. Also writing in The Sunday Telegraph, Tory lawmaker Nick Boles said he "can no longer support this humiliation".

We speak to employers who have been told virtually nothing about plans for next March - and are seriously anxious about the future for their staff and their businesses.

"Nobody is going to get exactly what they want but you have to start somewhere". May insists that won't happen, but the idea is gaining momentum.

Businesses on both sides of the channel are growing increasingly anxious about the prospect of a no-deal Brexit.

Mr Davis, who resigned in protest over the Chequers plan after two years as Mrs May's chief negotiator, told the BBC the proposal was "almost worse than being in" the European Union, and that Mrs May could use "national interest" as a caveat to justify further concessions.

"Frankly, if a government can not take action to prevent some of these catastrophic outcomes, whatever position you take on the European Union, it illustrates a whole lack of preparation", Lord King told the BBC.

Stephen Gethins, SNP Europe spokesman at Westminster, said: "As the deeply damaging consequences of a "no deal" Brexit become clearer, as Scotland's economy continues to outperform the United Kingdom and as people grow increasingly concerned about the future under Westminster rule, support for Scotland's ability to take its own decisions in an independent country will only grow further".

"The government has got six weeks to get this right", Starmer said.

In a report, it said a "chaotic Brexit" would mean "the disappearance without replacement of numerous rules underpinning the U.K.'s economic and regulatory structure" would disrupt everything from agriculture to financial services to aviation.
