Donald Trump presidency called 'Crazytown' in new Bob Woodward book

US President Donald Trump was not interviewed for the book

The president appeared frustrated by numerous stories that were not true, suggesting again that Congress change the libel laws for the press.

Trump added a comment from White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

"You can't have the type of success that this president has had if what that book says is true", Sanders said in an interview with ABC News chief anchor George Stephanopoulos on "Good Morning America" Wednesday, emphasizing the president's successes.

The president concluded that the statements refuted Woodward's book, and noted the "timing" of the release, though it was unclear what he meant by that. Not only that but it seems like they are so frustrated with him that they're calling Trump names! "I'm in the process of making some of the greatest trade deals ever to be made", Trump boasted, according to a transcript of the August 14 interview with Woodward released by the Post.

President Donald Trump speaks with Attorney General Jeff Sessions on the West Lawn of the US Capitol in Washington, May 15, 2017.

The book follows the January release of author Michael Wolff's "Fire and Fury", which led to a rift between Trump and Steve Bannon, his former chief strategist.

According to Woodward's reporting, Trump stumbles and contradicts himself during the exercise and Dowd is convinced that Trump should never sit down with Justice Department investigators.

"Those are his lawyers trying to help him not go to jail", an incredulous Colbert said before impersonating a fictional lawyer. When are you going to be a man? I said NEITHER, never used those terms on anyone, including Jeff, and being a southerner is a GREAT thing.

The president's tweet was part an aggressive effort by the White House to discredit Woodward's forthcoming book, Fear, which paints a harrowing portrait of the Trump presidency, based on in-depth interviews with administration officials and others.

Trump posted another statement from White House chief of staff John Kelly.

Colbert closed by reiterating one of the anecdotes from the book: that Trump's former lawyer John Dowd and his lawyer Jay Sekulow conducted a practice interview with Trump about the Russian Federation investigation.

Dowd, who resigned soon after that conversation with Mueller this March, is absolutely right.

Dowd told Trump later that month: "Don't testify".

The book quotes Mr Kelly as saying: "We're in Crazytown". After Trump left the room, Woodward wrote, Mattis told people that Trump understood the topic like a "fifth or sixth-grader".

Trump sent that statement around his Twitter feed, along with another from Secretary of Defense James Mattis.

The book portrays Trump as prone to profane outbursts and impulsive decision-making, painting a picture of chaos that Woodward says amounts to an "administrative coup d'etat" and a "nervous breakdown" of the executive branch.

What got Mattis' goat was that he felt like they'd had this exact conversation many times before, and Trump refused to either remember or process it.

He denied the charge then, calling it "total B.S.", and he's denying it now.

"It's a gutless coward who will not stand up and be counted for what he or she says has happened", he said.

In the book, Trump is described by staff as ignorant and impulsive. But Woodward's book repeats the claim, according to the Post. Trump responded, according to Woodward, "Oh, okay". I never got a message. "I am into fiction like General Mattis, so maybe I'll take a look at this one".

"I think we have to see the rest of the book". Wolff's book attracted attention with its vivid anecdotes but suffered from numerous factual inaccuracies.

In the biggest irony, Trump blasted the Obama White House in 2013 for "attacking" Woodward, during a controversy over an exchange Woodward had with an administration aide.

Mr Cohn, Mr Trump's most senior economic adviser before his departure earlier this year, reportedly went to remarkable lengths to curb the president's instincts.
