Former Republican US Senator Jon Kyl to replace McCain; wins bipartisan praise

Former Sen. Jon Kyl to finish out John McCain's term

The appointment was tweeted by McCain's widow, Cindy.

"There is no one in Arizona more prepared to represent our state in the US Senate than Jon Kyl", Doug Ducey, the governor from Arizona, followed up in a statement.

Kyl said he accepted the appointment because he is putting country first, like McCain did so many times during his political career. He also spoke at the brief ceremony at the Arizona Capitol last week before the public was invited in to see McCain lying in state.

Kyl has been spotted around the Senate recently as the sherpa for Judge Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court confirmation, guiding Kavanaugh through meetings with senators.

"I'm hoping that the senator will consider serving longer" than this year, Ducey said.

"Now, senator Kyl can cast a vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation". McConnell and his allies wanted to have someone replace McCain who would instantly go into campaign move for 2020 and again in 2022, when that person would run for a fresh, six-year full term in the Senate. "His patience, for example, his meticulous preparation and thoroughness, are, I'm sorry to say, not qualities that I'll be remembered for, but they've been indispensable to the people of our state".

Kyl said that he "will do my best to ensure that Arizonans continue to be well-represented in the Senate".

Daniel Ruiz II, a spokesman for Gov. Doug Ducey, disclosed the timing hours after Ducey appointed Kyl to fill the seat left vacant by the death of John McCain.

Kyl said he made a decision to return to the Senate because of his sense of duty "to the state I love", adding, "I'm putting my country first just as this seat's previous occupant did every single day". Kyl, who is 76, has committed only to holding the seat through the end of this year, meaning Ducey may get a chance to appoint McSally to the role if she falls short in her election this November against Democratic rival Kyrsten Sinema. Kyle promised Ducey he will at least serve through the end of the year. "I think he's his own worst enemy", Kyl said of Trump, adding that he "could be much more effective if he were more politic, more diplomatic".

"John Kyl is a dear friend of mine and John's".

McCain died on August 25 at 81 years old - just one day after announcing he would no longer seek treatment for an aggressive brain tumor. "Kyl could be sworn in as early as Tuesday night, though Wednesday is more likely, the aide said".

His appointment now allows him to vote for the nomination.

Appointing McCain's replacement was a tricky task for Ducey, as it required him to balance several competing concerns.
