Japan hit by strongest typhoon in 25 years

Typhoon Jebi tracking update

(Twitter/@_whgg/Social Media/Reuters) R: An aerial view shows a flooded runway at Kansai airport, which is built on a man-made island in a bay, after Typhoon Jebi hit the area, in Izumisano, western Japan, Sept. 5, 2018.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) has cancelled four flights to Osaka following the closure of Kansai International Airport due to floods caused by Typhoon Jebi.

On Wednesday, boats began ferrying people out of the airport, and buses began to run on one side of the damaged bridge after safety inspections.

Each boat was capable of carrying 110 passengers, and would go back and forth until all passengers were evacuated, Mami Yamaguchi from the New Kansai International Airport Company told CNN.

In addition, a runaway oil tanker drifted into and damaged the bridge connecting the airport to the mainland.

One of Japan's busiest airports remained closed indefinitely after the strongest typhoon to hit Japan in at least 25 years flooded a runway and other facilities while damaging other infrastructure and causing at least 11 deaths as it swept across part of Japan's main island. The typhoon was carrying strong winds of up to 162 kilometers per hour (100 mph), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. It raked across the western part of the largest main island, Honshu, near the city of Kobe, several hours later, before heading into the Sea of Japan in the evening.

Japanese media tallied at least nine deaths, and the Fire and Disaster Management Agency said almost 300 people were injured.

A vehicle lies upside-down along a road after being blown by typhoon Jebi's strong winds in Osaka on September 4, 2018. Television footage showed waves pounding the coastline amid warnings that high tides later Tuesday would coincide with the storm's passage.

Popular Osaka amusement park Universal Studios Japan also remained closed Wednesday - the first time it's been closed for two consecutive days since it opened in March 2001 - as the park operator worked to fix damaged caused by the storm.

As the typhoon lashed Shikoku and the Kii Peninsula, evacuation warnings and advisories were issued in many areas.

Three others reportedly died after they were struck by flying objects.

Worldwide news agency Reuters reported it as the most powerful storm to hit Japan in 25 years.

Universal Studios Japan, a popular amusement park near Osaka, is closed.

Parts of a train station roof also collapsed in Kyoto following the stormy weather. Prime Minister Shinzo Abe canceled a scheduled trip to Kyushu, Japan's southernmost main island, to oversee the government's response to the typhoon, said Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga.
