Twitter not based on ‘political ideology,’ CEO tells lawmakers

Jack Dorsey 2015

Google rejected requests to send its CEO Sundar Pichai or parent firm Alphabet chief Larry Page, but offered a writted statement from its chief legal officer Kent Walker.

He said Twitter is committed to rooting out abusive activity and "hostile foreign influence". "Because I know our members have a series of hard questions about structural vulnerabilities on a number of Google's platforms that we will need answered".

The three internet-based companies have in their interactions with the EC over the past months also agreed to observe a 48-hour "silence period" prior to polling and ensure no political advertisements are put up online during this time.

Google too was to be present at this hearing, but the company did not send a senior executive.

"In order to go into China, we would have to be able to do so in keeping with our values".

During a separate line of questioning from Sen.

Dorsey and Sandberg agreed that fake accounts are the root of many of their problems.

The search giant hastaken heat recently over reports of its considering introducing a Chinese search engine that would comply with that government's censorship laws. While all three tech companies have been accused of political bias against conservatives, the more public-facing nature of Twitter has made it an especially easy target.

"After some initial false starts, it seems like there has been a shift in the culture of your company", Warner said, though he raised the specter of congressional action. "The actions we've taken in response - beginning with the steps Facebook's General Counsel, Colin Stretch, outlined to this Committee a year ago - show our determination to do everything we can to stop this kind of interference from happening".

"The era of the wild west in social media is coming to an end", warned Senator Mark Warner, the vice-chairman of the Senate intelligence committee, in his opening remarks on Wednesday morning.

Over the past year, Facebook and Twitter have each launched public campaigns (and some not so public) to fight back against "inauthentic" accounts believed to be linked not only to Russian Federation, but to other malicious actors like Iran. The measure has not advanced in the chamber.

Lawmakers from both sides want the tech giants to explain how they are protecting the 2018 midterm election process from interference from Russian Federation.

In the statement, a shorter version of which Sandberg will read Wednesday, Sandberg outlines steps Facebook is taking to prevent future foreign meddling in elections through its platform.

"These are expensive investments, but that will not stop us because we know they are critical, she said".

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones held a press conference outside the Senate hearing room as the testimony began to criticize the social media companies for banning him and his website Infowars from their platforms.
