Gordon, never a hurricane, killed child in mobile home

Tropical Storm Gordon track expected to bring winds to Sebastian, Vero Beach

Tropical Storm Gordon has weakened to a tropical depression after it made landfall near the Alabama-Mississippi border Tuesday night, resulting in one death and loss of power to almost 40,000 homes along the Gulf Coast. But it was going out swinging: Forecasters said radar spotted possible tornados spun off by the storm overnight in southern Alabama and the Florida panhandle, and more were possible through Wednesday night in MS and western Alabama.

The system is expected to meet a cold front moving across Oklahoma and produce more rain in the two states while pushing the remnants northward into Missouri. However, no major damage or serious injuries were reported, other than the one fatality - a baby in a mobile home, struck by a large tree limb in Pensacola late Tuesday.

Michael Barradas told The Pensacola News Journal he heard the loud crack and ran out of his mobile home and yelled, "Is everyone OK?'" He says the mother said, "No my baby's in there". Beachgoers in the area were warned Wednesday of unsafe rip currents that prompted red-flag warnings, meaning it was illegal to enter the Gulf of Mexico.

Gordon continues to weaken and spin over central Mississippi.

Driftwood and other debris made for hazardous driving early Wednesday on the causeway to Dauphin Island, Alabama, which was partly flooded by seawater overnight.

"We ducked a punch", said Mayor Andrew Gilich of Biloxi, whose office noted that he is a former boxer. Tens of thousands of customers spent part of Wednesday without electricity.

Locally, a day of rain and storms from the tropical storm passed in the Golden Triangle without any significant damage.

The last hurricane to strike the US was Nate last October, coming ashore in Biloxi with 75 miles per hour (120 kph) winds.

A storm surge covered barrier islands as the storm blew through, and some inland roadways were flooded by the rain.

"I just hope I don't have to throw out everything in my refrigerator when I get home", said Jerome Richardson, spending the morning at a Mobile Waffle House after losing power the night before at his home.

Governors in Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana all declared states of emergency to better mobilize state resources and National Guard troops for the storm. Communities along the coast provided sand and bags, and many hustled to protect their properties ahead of the storm.

The HWN had activated on September 4, while Gordon was still a tropical storm. 2-3 inches of rain is likely over the Tri-State with heavier amounts in our far northern counties. "If you haven't done so already, now would be a good time to review your Family Emergency Plan and your Emergency Supply Checklist".
