4 missing after Colorado River boat collision

People missing after boating accident on the Colorado River near Needles - Victor Valley News

One of the four missing people in a boat collision on the Colorado River along the Arizona-California border was recovered about 36 hour later on Monday morning, authorities said.

The deceased boater was identified as Christine Lewis, 51, a nurse at Kaweah Delta Medical Center in Visalia, California.

Lewis and three others were missing after the two recreational boats they were on crashed into each other on the Colorado River between Pirates Cove and Topock Marina at about 8 p.m. Saturday.

More than 60 crew members from Arizona and California resumed their search on boats at sunrise Monday, tracking their progress with a computer program that mapped the riverbed.

Nine people were transported to area hospitals by ambulance.

Both boats sank, and passing boaters pulled crash victims from the water.

Emergency services scrambled to the scene, with one person suffering life-threatening injuries airlifted to a Las Vegas hospital. Rescuers had to call off the search until Sunday morning because it was too unsafe to put divers in the river after dark.

Mohave County, which borders the Colorado River, is a county in Arizona.

The search is continuing for the three other missing people.

Eric Sherwin, spokesman for the San Bernardino County Fire District, says the vessels collided head-on Saturday evening.

Dozens of divers from multiple agencies have assisted in the search which, over the past two days, has covered a roughly 5-mile-long stretch of the river, from Park Moabi Channel to Topock Gorge. The water ranged in depth from very shallow to 30 feet, he said.

The name of the boater still missing hasn't been released.

Helicopters were deployed, and authorities scoured the shoreline to try to find the boaters.

Anita Mortensen, a sheriff's spokeswoman, said that investigators haven't yet determined if speed played any role in the accident.

No one on the boats was wearing a life vest, Schuster said.
