Dallas officer kills man after entering wrong apartment

Botham Shem Jean 26 was shot dead in his home by a Dallas police officer Thursday night

The 26-year-old officer told investigators she thought she had entered her own residence, the statement said.

She said emergency responders had arrived within four minutes of being called, and Jean was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police have not said if the officer fired because she thought the man was an intruder in her home or if she had another reason.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident, and could not yet say what exactly led to the officer firing her weapon, or how she ended up in the wrong apartment.

According to a news release, preliminary information suggested that the officer came home in uniform after working a full shift.

They also added the officer was tested for drugs and alcohol afterward.

The shooting happened around 10 p.m. Thursday. However, Chief Hall did confirm she is a white patrol officer.

"Right now, there are more questions than answers,"Chief Ulysha Renee Hall said Friday during a press conference".

"We have reassured them that we are working diligently and that we have invited an outside agency to investigate this", she said.

"He did no one any wrong", the victim's mother Allie Jean told NBC News over-the-phone.

"Initial indications were that we were dealing with an officer-involved shooting".

Police have not spoken to any other individuals at this time and did not say that there were any witnesses.

The Texas Rangers, a state-wide law enforcement agency, will conduct an independent investigation of the shooting.

Jean, originally from the island of St. Lucia, came to the USA to study at the Christian Harding University in Arkansas, per NBC, where he is remembered as "always friendly, always smiling".

"It was, like, police talk: 'Open up!" They told The Dallas Morning News that they can open apartments with either standard keys or a keypad code.

"I don't think there was a student on campus who didn't know Botham", said Landis Tindell, who reflected on Botham Shem's service as a resident adviser.

Yazmine Hernandez, 20, was studying with Ms Simpson when they heard the commotion.

'We heard cops yelling, but otherwise had no idea what was going on, ' Ms Hernandez said.

Jean was listed on LinkedIn as a risk assurance experienced associate at PricewaterhouseCoopers.
