Flo's On The Go: Massive Storm Barrels Toward East Coast

Storm season peaks: Hurricane Florence still far from landfall, uncertainty remains for East Coast

Large swells from Florence are expected to hit Bermuda starting Friday, and portions of the U.S. East Coast over the weekend.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Friday night that Tropical Storm Helene was located about 405 miles (650 kilometers) east of the southernmost Cabo Verde Islands.

If Florence's track takes its farther west, it could push toward the East Coast with possible impacts on the area next Wednesday and Thursday.

The storm is nearly 1,600 miles from the Outer Banks of North Carolina and is still as much as a week away from a potential USA landfall, according to the latest forecast from the National Hurricane Center.

The National Hurricane Center warns people around the area to prepare for unsafe rip currents.

Forecasters in the Baltimore region say any impacts here remain unclear. And it's definitely too early to tell where they will go.

With hurricane season in its peak months, storm activity began to heat up across the Atlantic with several systems in varying stages of development.

Florence is still a tropical storm, but is expected to become a hurricane by Sunday, and a major hurricane again early next week.

It's not yet clear whether Florence will threaten the United States, although forecast tracks show it could make landfall along the Carolinas.

Florence could cause risky surf and rip currents along parts of the U.S. East Coast this weekend as the storm swirls across the Atlantic, according to forecasters at the National Hurricane Center.

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is tracking the storm, now churning across the Atlantic southeast of Bermuda.

"All interests in the public should keep a very close eye" on the storm, Pfaff said. Given sufficient warm water and low shear, Depression Nine should become a tropical storm sometime on Saturday.

The Emergency Measures Organisation, which is expected to meet on Monday, announced that public transport, schools and government offices would operate as normal that day.

The Hurricane Center reported at 8 a.m. that a tropical depression could form over the weekend or early next week while the wave moves westward or west-northwestward over the far eastern tropical Atlantic Ocean.
