Trump says he could meet Russian Federation investigation special counsel ‘under certain circumstances’

George Papadopoulos and wife Simona Mangiante Papadopoulos after their Chicago wedding

Prosecutors had asked for six months.

Russian Federation has denied U.S. allegations that it interfered in the campaign, while Trump has regularly lashed out against the sprawling probe he dubs a "witch hunt" driven by his Democratic foes.

Court documents suggest Mueller's office had hoped to secure Papadopoulos' cooperation, but quickly concluded he could not be trusted when he began meeting with reporters.

US Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating widespread claims that Trump colluded with Russian Federation to get an edge over Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election, has previously offered to allow Trump to answer his questions in writing. He recalled how he and attorney Robert Stanley and Papadopoulos visited the Federal Bureau of Investigation office in Chicago months ago and noticed the photos of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Trump hanging on the lobby wall.

Papadopoulos's attorney, Thomas M. Breen, went further, saying "the President of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could", by calling the investigation fake news and a witch hunt.

After Papadopoulos and his legal team left the courthouse in a black Chevy Suburban, his family members hung behind outside the courthouse. "He was riding very high, as Mr. Papadopoulos said to me himself, he had just come from the inauguration of the president of the United States". He also fined him $US9500 ($13,000) and ordered him to complete 200 hours of community service and one year of probation after his release. Papdopoulos had allegedly been communicating with a professor and with ties to the Russian government who told him that Russia had "dirt" on Hillary Clinton, including those stolen emails. Breen argued that those comments influenced Papadopoulos's decision to lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The FBI canceled the meeting when it discovered that Mr. Papadopoulos had sat down for a media interview about the case.

Even after his arrest and plea agreement a year ago, Goldstein said, Papadopoulos continued to be hard, only providing information after being confronted with documents such as emails and text messages.

Special counsel Robert Mueller's team informed the President that it would allow him to submit written answers to questions; Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani replied that questions about obstruction of justice were a "no-go", in person or in writing.

Breen told reporters outside court, "I think we're all somewhat satisfied at this point in time that they know Russian Federation meddled in the election".

He also used his connections to the professor to seek to broker a meeting between Trump and Putin.

Moss said that while Papadopoulos lied for selfish reasons and did real harm to the government's efforts to carry out its investigation of Russian meddling, he was moved by what he called the defendant's "genuine remorse about what he did". Maria said that the judge "got it right" in giving Papadopoulos 14 days in prison.

The lawyers portrayed Papadopoulos as "out of his depth" as a foreign policy adviser for a candidate for whom he had "unbridled loyalty". "A great day for America!" he tweeted.
