HACKED British Airways said customers details have been stolen

British Airways contacted affected customers as soon as it found out data from its website and mobile app had been breached, its boss said on Friday.

BA chief executive Alex Cruz said Friday that enough data was stolen to allow criminals to use credit card information for illicit purposes, and that police are investigating.

The airline said the incident has been resolved and all systems are working normally.

The company said it is communicating with affected customers and advised anyone who believed they may have been affected to contact their banks or credit card providers.

"We take the protection of your personal information very seriously".

BA is the latest major United Kingdom company to report such an attack - seemingly the largest since the owner of Currys PC World, Dixons Carphone, admitted in early summer that nine million of its customers had been hit by a data breach.

Cruz said the airline immediately contacted customers when the extent of the breach became clear.

Future bookings will not be affected, BA said.

Speaking to Sky News, he said the online vulnerability had now been fixed after it was discovered on Wednesday, and indicated compensation could be a possibility for anyone who had lost money.

"I´ve not heard anything from them on this and I´ve just had to cancel the card I used".

"Anyone concerned they could be at risk of fraud should consider changing their online passwords, monitor bank and other online accounts and be wary of emails regarding the breach as scammers may try and take advantage of it".

The airline's recent data breach follows a massive incident that saw round 10 million records containing personal data of Dixons Carphone customers accessed.

British Airways experienced an IT-related crisis in May a year ago when roughly 75,000 passengers were stranded after the airline cancelled more than 700 flights over three days because of system problems.

Around 380,000 payment cards were compromised.
