Mother wonders if race factored into son’s death in Dallas

Amber Guyger is being held at the Kaufman County Jail in lieu of a $300,000 bond, online records show.

A Dallas police officer has been charged with manslaughter after she shot and killed her 26-year-old neighbor in an apartment she thought was hers.

Dallas police have released the name of the officer they say mistakenly entered a man's home before shooting him dead. She reported the shooting to dispatchers and she told officers who responded that she had mistaken Jean's apartment for her own.

On Saturday, the Texas Rangers, which is now handling the investigation, made a decision to postpone pursuing a warrant against Guyger "until they could follow up on information that they received from the interview with the officer", the Dallas Police Department said.

Dallas police Chief Renee Hall said Saturday that the Rangers had asked her to hold off on a planned manslaughter charge while their investigation is underway, FOX 4 of Dallas reported. Investigators haven't released the results of those tests.

Government leaders of the Caribbean island nation of Saint Lucia say the shooting death in Dallas of an island native came as a "shock" and that embassy officials in the US will provide assistance to the victim's family. The Rangers, she said, had interviewed Guyger and wanted to further investigate information obtained from her. "That includes holding Amber Guyger accountable for her crimes as well as ID'ing all responsible for enabling this incident". Would she have reacted differently?' she told KXAS.

Jean's mother, Allison Jean, wondered whether race could have been a factor. "This family is upset", Merritt said, standing beside Allison Jean as they faced a half-dozen television cameras at the back of the church auditorium.

The apartment doors at the complex are all similar, Kinsey said, but Jean's doorstep had a bright red mat.

Jean's death has renewed calls for policing reform and places the national spotlight back on a police department that, just two years ago, lost five of its officers in a shooting.

"So just knowing the way that he died it seems unfair because think of the nice person that you know and the most generous person that you know and then they get shot as if they were a criminal or thief", Jessica said.

The man, later identified as Uvaldo Perez, 46, took Guyger's Taser. Perez got out of a auto and became combative with Ms Guyger and another officer.

No charges have been filed as of late Saturday and the case has since been handed over to the Texas Rangers for investigation, officials said. Also, the officer was not one of the people with Jean in a picture that has been circulating on social media, sources said. "But at some point, she fired her weapon, striking the victim". They described Jean as a devout Christian and a talented singer.

Friends and family gathered Saturday at the Dallas West Church of Christ to remember Jean, who had been working for accounting firm PwC since graduating in 2016 from Harding University in Arkansas, where he often led campus religious services as a student.

"Botham was a very wonderful young man", Bertram Jean said.
