Three toddlers among dead in Australia mass killing

No charges have been laid yet and it is unclear on whether the man is related to the victims

Police are questioning a man in his 20s who walked into a police station on Sunday in a remote mining town, about 1 400 kilometres north of Perth, and provided information about the incident.

Anthony Robert Harvey, 24, appeared in Perth Magistrates Court via videolink from Karratha, where he is now being held in police custody.

A young man has been charged with the murder of five people including three toddlers, Australian police said Monday, after a mass killing at a suburban home.

The man accused of killing five family members in Bedford has made a brief appearance in court.

Upon arrival at the home, officers found the bodies of mother Mara Quinn, her three daughters - Charlotte, aged three, and two-year-old twins Alice and Beatrix, along with their grandmother.

No further details about when and how they were killed, or the family's relationship with the man, were released.

According to her Facebook page, Mara Quinn became engaged in August 2014 and had her first child in March 2015.

A real estate listing showed a modest three-bedroom house and a standalone garage.

Records show she bought the family's home in 2008.

A neighbour told national broadcaster ABC he had returned from a holiday to "silence in the street".

A couple who live a few doors down from the house said they did not know the family but were horrified when police knocked on their door on Sunday and told them what had happened.

"We had some friends staying here who have also mentioned that they didn't see or hear anybody next door for the week that we were away. we could hear and see the kids playing in the backyard quite often".

A bouquet of red roses with a card saying "rest in peace, neighbours" has been placed on a light pole near the house.

Violent crime with multiple victims is rare in Australia but this was the second major incident in Western Australia this year.

In July a man allegedly killed his mother and two siblings.
