‘Extremely dangerous’ Hurricane Florence is now packing winds of 220 km/h

Hurricane Isaac

The earliest reasonable time that tropical storm force winds will reach the coast of the Carolinas is Wednesday night, but the most likely time is sometime Thursday morning, the hurricane center predicted on Monday.

"The bottom line is that there is increasing confidence that Florence will be a large and extremely risky hurricane, regardless of its exact intensity", Blake said. By Monday morning, the hurricane center classified Florence as a "major" Category 3 hurricane, with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour.

The National Hurricane Center warns that Florence could soon cause a coastal surge that includes flooding before the storm is projected for USA landfall (probably) on Thursday.

North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper's office said Florence is already being felt along the state's coast, with large sea swells resulting in life-threatening rip currents and surf.

"NOAA Hurricane Hunter plane investigating Florence found that its winds had increased to 130 miles per hour late Monday morning", said The Weather Channel.

"When you stall a system like this and it moves real slow, some of that rainfall can extend well away from the center", Mr Graham said, according to the Associated Press.

USA landfall could come Friday between Charleston, South Carolina and Norfolk, Virginia, the Hurricane Center said.

"Based on that information, I have made a decision to order a mandatory evacuation of Zone A in Hampton Roads and the Eastern Shore", Northam said Monday.

Florence could be the first Category 4 hurricane to hit the Carolinas since Hurricane Hugo in 1989.

South Carolina's price-gouging law is now in effect, as the state is on guard for anyone who may try to take advantage of the preparations for Hurricane Florence.

While it weakened to a Category 2, it has just strengthened to a Category 3, and meteorologists expect it to regain more strength as it bears toward the East Coast of the United States.

Mandatory evacuation orders were issued Monday for parts of North Carolina's Outer Banks, with wider orders expected to follow later this week.

A tropical storm becomes a hurricane when maximum sustained winds reach 74 miles per hour. The state's emergency management agency said it is "preparing for the possibility of a large-scale disaster". The United States was hit with a series of high-powered hurricanes past year, including Hurricane Maria, which killed some 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Harvey, which killed about 68 people and caused an estimated $1.25 billion in damage with catastrophic flooding in Houston.

Hurricane Helene, was spinning in the Atlantic off West Africa's Cape Verde islands with 85-mph (140-kph) winds on Monday, but did not appear to pose an immediate threat to land.
