Alex Cora Calls Out Donald Trump for Comments About Puerto Rico

Massive stockpile of bottled water found in Puerto Rico a year after Maria

Two of Florida's top Republicans on Thursday distanced themselves from President Donald Trump's false claim that Hurricane Maria did not kill almost 3,000 people in Puerto Rico previous year, despite an estimate accepted by the island's government. He said the toll was no greater than 18 when he visited the island past year and "did not go up by much". "Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000".

Trump had questioned the findings of a study released last month by George Washington University that examined the toll from Hurricane Maria.

That's despite new estimates that nearly 3,000 people died as a result of the storm - a number Trump now doesn't believe is accurate, blaming Democrats for inflating the number for political gain. "Our basic infrastructure was devastated, thousands of our people lost their lives and many others still struggle".

"We've been battling through it", Cora said, via NBC Sports Boston.

Regarding Hurricane Maria, Gutierrez alleged that Trump's focus from the beginning "was on damage control from a political standpoint, not damage control from a human life standpoint".

Mr Gutierrez, who is of Puerto Rican heritage, was involved in the U.S. territory's recovery operation.

Lynn Goldman, the dean of GW's Milken Institute School of Public Health stressed that the number is not precise and more work should be done on the issue.

One media outlet where Trump was not subjected to scathing criticism for his Hurricane Maria death toll denials, however, was Fox News, according to a report by ShareBlue.

There's growing sentiment that this is the worst tweet by Trump ever.

A United States government report published this month concluded that the federal response in Puerto Rico was hampered by a lack of trained staff as well as by major logistical challenges.

San Juan Mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz tweeted to the president on Thursday: "Shame on you", including a picture of his tweet.

Trump touted the federal government's response as "an incredible, unsung success" this week.

Cora's comments came as the USA braces for Hurricane Florence, which is expected to cause heavy damage as it slams into the Carolinas this week.

"If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list", said Trump, attempting to dismiss the long-term effects of the disaster, where the island was without electricity and water for months, as the administration struggled to restore power. I've been to Puerto Rico 7 times & saw devastation firsthand. He has a golf club in North Carolina and a winery in Virginia, so maybe the American people in those states will get more of the President's help than my fellow Puerto Ricans did.

"I disagree with @POTUS", Scott tweeted.

Even a few of Mr Trump's fellow Republicans have spoken out against him.

Celebrity chef José Andrés, who brought a crew of volunteers to help feed victims of Maria in the wake of the storm, called for an "official independent investigation" into what happened to the stash of drinking water.
