Djokovic Takes US Title

Millman 'Roger Federer is the best but Djokovic is not that far behind'

Sixth-seeded Novak Djokovic won his 14th career Grand Slam title, sweeping past Argentina's Juan Martin del Potro 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-3 in the U.S. Open title match on Sunday at Arthur Ashe Stadium in NY.

It comes seven years after the New York Times revealed top chair umpires were skipping the US Open because of how poorly it paid officials.

It appeared it could be easier when Djokovic broke del Potro in the second game of the set and led 3-1.

Novak Djokovic kept getting the ball back, so del Potro would take a bigger whack, trying to find some spot in the corner of the court that would be uncovered.

Djokovic was far superior to del Potro in the opening set, then dropped three consecutive games in the second to trail 4-3.

Djokovic was the favourite in the match considering the fact that this was his eighth US Open final appearance while for Del Potro, this was just his second Grand Slam final appearance after his historic US Open triumph in 2009. He finished with a flourish, taking the last three games. If he beats del Potro, Djokovic will equal Pete Sampras for third place among men for major singles titles, trailing only Roger Federer's 20 and Rafael Nadal's 17. He is now just three Slams behind Rafael Nadal and six back from the record 20 held by Roger Federer.

The win at Flushing Meadows enabled Djokovic to complete a Wimbledon-US Open double after lifting his fourth Wimbledon title earlier this year at the All England Club in London. "I don't know when will be my last tournament in this career, but I'm excited to keep surprising myself doing things like this".

"There was always part of me that imagined and believed and hoped that I can get back (to) the desired level of tennis very soon", said Djokovic, whose operation was in February.

He sealed the win with a forehand volley before going to hug a visibly-dejected Del Potro at the net. This is the healthiest and fittest Del Potro has felt in years.

Playing on the same court where Pete Sampras claimed his 14th and final Grand Slam crown, Djokovic had endured more disappointment than joy on Arthur Ashe, mining just three titles from eight finals.

Djokovic, the No. 6 seed, missed this tournament a year ago as he struggled with an elbow injury that ultimately required surgery. Here's a look at those who expressed congratulations to Djokovic.

"Today I really am".

When Djokovic is in peak health, as he finally is following a long bout with a right elbow injury that eventually required surgery after this year's Australian Open, he is most definitely a man on a mission.

The three-time US Open victor said his hike in France had given him a fresh perspective on life.

And then came Sunday's pivotal game, a 20-minute, 22-point epic.

The tiebreaker was resolved thanks to more del Potro miscues on his forehand side, as he looked more and more worn out.

While Simona Halep of Romania retained her top spot on the list, Germany?s Angelique Kerber moved one spot up to acquire the third position. Of course I'm sad to lose but I'm happy for Novak as well.
