The Impact Of Hurricane Florence

2 p.m. update: Florence within 110 miles of Wilmington

Rain chances do gradually increase Sunday to 50 percent by the afternoon.

Helene had maximum sustained winds of 70 miles per hour and was moving north at 18 miles per hour.

Helene is among a glut of tropical storms brewing in the region, with mass evacuations under way in southern U.S. states as Florence barrels across Virginia and the Carolinas.

A southerly wind continues to freshen into the evening, becoming strong to gale in exposed parts of the North and West after dark.

The National Hurricane Center said that the storm is Category 4 in strength. This rainfall may cause risky flash flooding, N.H.C. said.

A National Weather Service satellite monitoring Hurricane Florence has recorded a wave reaching 83 feet in the storm churning in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Barbados Meteorological Services continues to closely monitor the progress of Tropical Storm Isaac over the Atlantic.

That is causing the so called "cone of uncertainty" to expand.

Hurricane Warnings are in effect from the South Santee River in SC to Duck, North Carolina.

Tropical storm force winds are in the 39-73 miles per hour range, says NOAA.

Current guidance has the low pressure system moving northeastwards up through the Irish Sea overnight Monday and early on Tuesday, although the exact path is still uncertain.

The National Hurricane Center is predicting the storm will produce "catastrophic flash flooding and significant river flooding".

As Hurricane Florence barreled across the Atlantic towards the East Coast, researchers were keeping a close watch.

However, according to the latest projections, the storm might shift slightly to the south and affect Georgia with heavy rain and possible flooding. North West England, Wales and the South West may also see showers later in the night, with patchy rain perhaps moving into the remainder of northern England and the North and West Midlands by morning.

The barrier island of Emerald Isle is under water, with ocean waves rolling in over a six-foot storm surge and crashing into homes.
