Man Dies After Shark Attack on Cape Cod

The man was pulled from the water and given CPR, but later died in hospital from his injuries, police in the town of Wellfleet said.

The beach was closed soon after and will remain closed until officials decide what to do.

Cape Cod National Seashore Superintendent Brian Carlstrom said, "We are deeply saddened by this tragic event and our condolences go out to the Medici Family".

There has been an increase in shark sightings in the area as the grey seal population has increased.

He told the Cape Cod Times: "I saw a tail and a lot of thrashing".

Truro has since closed all ocean side beaches until further notice.

Saturday's attack was the third fatal shark attack in the world this year, with the other two occurring in Brazil and Egypt, according to Gavin Naylor, director of the Florida Program for Shark Research and curator at the Florida Museum of Natural History. At least 6 people were reported to have died in shark attacks in 2017.

Cape Cod National Seashore warned beachgoers on its website that no lifeguards are on duty at its beaches during offseason months, and advises them to watch for white sharks.

Hurley said the Cape Cod District Attorney will handle an investigation in to the incident.

He sustained severe injuries to his legs and is still recovering in hospital.

It's not clear what type of shark was involved in the attack.
