London Mayor calls for a second referendum on Brexit

Boris Johnson

Mrs May has been dogged by claims rebels in her party are seeking to depose in the next six months.

Daily Mail readers are increasingly pessimistic about the state of Brexit negotiations, with only a quarter of them believing it is likely that Britain will get a good deal with the European Union and 86% of them agreeing that the process of leaving the European Union "has been a mess".

"I believe we'll get a good deal, we'll bring that back from the European Union negotiations and put that to Parliament", Mrs May told the BBC in an interview to be broadcast later on Monday (Sept 17).

"Let me be clear, compared with today's smooth single market, all the likely Brexit scenarios will have costs for the economy and to a lesser extent as well for the EU", Lagarde said as the International Monetary Fund presented its annual report on Britain's economy.

Both sides have tried to "de-dramatise" the issue and are sounding more upbeat that a deal is in reach.

"Let's be clear about this, under "no-deal" there would be some short-term disruption". A no-deal Brexit "would impose very large costs on the U.K economy", she said.

However, with the clock ticking on striking a new deal, the British government is readying plans for a no-deal Brexit, something that analysts have said could be even more damaging to the country's economy.

However, stronger-than-expected data last week showed the economy had its fastest growth in almost a year, helped by the World Cup and hot summer weather.

"I very much hope and pray that there will be a deal between the European Union and the United Kingdom", she told reporters.

May has told the BBC in an interview scheduled for broadcast Monday, Sept. 17, 2018, that she gets "irritated" by the debate over her leadership during Brexit negotiations. The Conservative government's handling of negotiations has been so poor, he said, that now he can't see any alternative to giving Britons another chance to stay in the EU.

"There are still parts of the withdrawal agreement that require further negotiation".

European leaders gather in Salzburg, Austria, on Wednesday to try to unlock talks which have stalled for months over how to prevent the return of a hard border on the island of Ireland after Brexit.

The gloomy assessment contrasts with that of British Prime Minister Theresa May, who indicated last week that a no-deal Brexit would not be a disaster for Britain.

Meanwhile, Boris Johnson, the former foreign secretary, has once again attacked Mrs May's Chequers plan describing it as a "spectacular political vehicle crash".

"The whole thing is a constitutional abomination, and if Chequers were adopted it would mean that for the first time since 1066 our leaders were deliberately acquiescing in foreign rule", Johnson said, referring to the 11th Century invasion which established Norman rule over England.

However the PM has said the counter-proposal to her Chequers plan is "still a hard border" and hers is the only way that does not "carve up the United Kingdom" and put the Union at risk.

It said challenges in getting a deal done were "daunting" and warned against further United Kingdom interest rate rises.
