Russian Federation blames France for downing plane near Syria as rockets hit Latakia

The Israeli military refused to comment on claims they were behind the attack on Syria.

The ministry also said that it detected missile launches from a French frigate nearby around that time.

At around the same time, Syrian state media SANA reported that government air defenses had "intercepted hostile missiles coming from the sea into Latakia city".

Russia's military on Tuesday said one of its aircraft with 14 people on board has disappeared over Syria's Mediterranean Sea coast.

Earlier in the day, Russian Federation and Turkeyreached an agreement over a partial demilitarization of the Idlib province, which is the last remaining stronghold of anti-government insurgency and al-Qaeda-linked terror groups in Syria.

Local reports suggested similar attacks were underway in Tartus, another city on the Mediterranean coast, although this was not immediately confirmed by state media.

A witness in Latakia told Reuters that he spotted four missiles downed by Syrian air defences.

RIA Novosti news agency, citing a security source, said that Syrian anti-defence systems had countered a rocket attack.

More news: Florence isn't the only one. There are more hurricanes brewing

U.S. officials believe the Il-20 surveillance plane - with 14 people aboard - was accidentally brought down by anti-aircraft artillery operated by Moscow's ally, the Syrian government, Reuters reported.

The Syrian government regularly accuses Israel of targeting its military positions.

One of the missiles fell in an open area to the west of central Homs city causing a fire in an orchard, Ikhbariya TV said.

Erdogan said that the deal "will prevent a humanitarian tragedy that could happen as a result of military action" and that the agreement between the two countries would bring "hope to the region".

Monday's attack came hours after Russian Federation and Turkey announced an agreement that effectively prevents a Syrian government offensive against Idlib, a rebel-held area in northwestern Syria.

After an airstrike in which United States and its allies fired over 100 missiles towards suspected chemical weapons facilities in April, Russian forces claimed the "high-effectiveness" of Russian-supplied weapons and "excellent training of Syrian servicemen" had shot down 71 missiles.

During the more than seven-year conflict in neighbouring Syria, Israel has grown deeply alarmed by the expanding clout of Iran, a Syrian government ally.

In November 2015, Turkey shot down a Russian warplane near the Syrian border, triggering a severe crisis in ties with Moscow.
