Brett Kavanaugh: what is he accused of, and what happens next?

World Service - Newsday, Will Kavanaugh accuser testify?

It appears that Democrats could - one again - derail the confirmation of a Supreme Court nominee thanks in part to Republicans, predicts a constitutional attorney.

The Senate's judiciary committee, which oversees Supreme Court nominations, has scheduled a hearing for Monday and invited both Ford and Kavanaugh to testify.

Ford's attorneys say she wants the FBI to investigate her allegation before she testifies. Richard Blumenthal of CT, said staging the hearing without the FBI investigation would make it a "sham".

"The Judiciary Committee is attempting to investigate Dr. Ford's allegation but can't without her testimony", added Sen.

Democrats, already fiercely opposed to the nominee, have also been seeking an FBI investigation, a request that Republicans have rebuffed. By margins of as much as 20 points, women are less favorable than men to President Trump and more inclined to say they favor Democrats in the November 6th congressional elections.

Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) tweeted Tuesday. It's about organizing a delay until next year when her party hopes to take back the Senate majority.

Grassley didn't say whether Thursday's committee vote will go forward. We've moved beyond "he said, she said" territory, but it's still the case that observers are left largely to their own evaluations of the veracity of the accuser and the accused.

President Donald Trump says "we'll have to make a decision" if Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's sexual-assault accuser "makes a credible showing" before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, told NBC News that Ford is "mixed up", and called Kavanaugh "honest" and "straightforward". This is not a man that deserves this, ' Trump told journalists.

In New Hampshire, state Representative Norman J. Silber made waves Monday when he published a letter in the Laconia Daily Sun newspaper, writing a mock confession that he shared a "closed-mouth kiss or two" with a girl during a high school game of spin the bottle. "Why did they wait until everything was finished and then bring it up?"

"We just don't know what happened 36 years ago and there are gaps in her memory". "She analyzes the data and lets the data tell the story".

Democrats complain that Ms Ford was not consulted before the hearing was announced.

Manafort pleaded guilty last week to criminal charges stemming from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry into Russian interference in the USA 2016 presidential election and possible co-ordination between the Trump campaign and Moscow. Mark Judge, the person Ford said witnessed the attempted assault, has said he doesn't remember anything about it and doesn't want to testify before the committee.

And there's Patrick Smyth, who Ford alleges was also at the party where the incident is alleged to have occurred and who, through a letter from an attorney, denied the claim. "We should honor Dr. Blasey Ford's wishes and delay this hearing", ranking member Dianne Feinstein said in a statement. "A proper investigation must be completed, witnesses interviewed, evidence reviewed and all sides spoken to. I have, however, referred the matter to federal investigative authorities", Feinstein said.

27 years after the Senate shamefully dragged Anita Hill through the mud in the Clarence Thomas hearings, America has a chance to do things better.

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham of SC, also a Judiciary Committee member, said that if Ford wants to provide information to the committee, "I would gladly listen to what she has to say". "We want everybody to be able to speak up and speak out". Ford was 15 at the time of the alleged incident.

Trump is praising Kavanaugh as one of the finest people he's known.

Judge is the author of a 1997 memoir titled "Wasted: Tales of a Gen X Drunk", which recounts his experiences as a teenage alcoholic. Trump said he did not meet with his nominee and declined to say whether Kavanaugh had offered to withdraw, dismissing the question as "ridiculous".

"I believe Dr Ford". "She doesn't know how she got there, when it was and so that would logically be something where she would get questions", he said.
