Trump Travels To The Flood-Soaked Carolinas

North Carolina DOT officials have asked for days that out of state drivers to avoid driving in the state if possible.

Trump promised, "Whatever we have to do at the federal level, we will be there".

Thousands of homes and roadways in the region remain underwater less than a week after the storm made landfall.

The governor said 16 rivers statewide were at major flood stage and more than 1,100 roads were closed.

Hurricane Florence left a path of death and destruction across North Carolina as the storm's remnants head northeast.

Experts say people likely got complacent about Florence because of a scale that only categorizes hurricanes by wind strength. Cooper called the storm "epic", "disastrous" and "widespread", noting that 27 deaths have been confirmed by the state and others are under investigation.

More than 5 million gallons (18 million liters) of partially treated sewage spilled into the Cape Fear River after power went out at a treatment plant, officials said, and the earthen dam of a pond holding hog waste was breached, spilling its contents.

Trump at times has struggled to project empathy during national crisis. He also cheered on volunteers and emergency workers and handed out hot dogs and potato chips to residents.

"If she shows up and makes a credible showing, that'll be very interesting", the president said, adding that he "really would want to see what she has to say". "This will be a total lie, but that's what they do, and everybody knows it!"

Thousands of people are still in shelters in North Carolina anxiously waiting to find out if they have a home to go back to. Mr. President, we have never seen one like this.

He was accompanied by Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, Federal Emergency Management Agency chief Brock Long, Senators Richard Burr and Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Senators Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott of SC.

U.S. President Donald Trump participates in a briefing with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen on Hurricane Florence recovery efforts at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in Havelock, North Carolina, U.S., September 19, 2018.

Murphy said many in the community were displaced from their homes for months after Hurricane Matthew in 2016.

Murphy said her message for President Trump as he visits the state is, "Next week is a long time - you have to act now".
