Helicopter called to second Whitsunday Island shark attack in 24 hours

The 46-year-old Tasmanian woman had jumped into the water near a chartered yacht at Cid Harbour on Wednesday afternoon when she was bitten on her upper right leg and torso

The 46-year-old Tasmanian woman had been bitten on the leg by a shark and was bleeding profusely.

The girl, who was holidaying with her father and sister, was flown to the Mackay Base Hospital in a critical condition and will have surgery.

The 12-year-old has undergone emergency surgery for massive blood loss after becoming the second shark victim in as many days in Cid Harbour.

The woman was then winched onto the CQ rescue helicopter with a "significant shark bite to her right thigh and a smaller wound to her right lower leg".

She was treated for 20 minutes on the beach, having sustained "fairly large wounds with artery and bones, vessels, (and a) large haemorrhage" according to Queensland Ambulance Service's Tracey Eastwick.

She was "conscious but critical" when she was moved from Proserpine to Mackay Base Hospital, arriving just after 8pm, Ms Eastwick said.

She said two paramedics and a doctor responded to the more recent attack with the RACQ CQ Rescue helicopter, which landed on a nearby beach by 2.50pm.

The 12-year-old was rescued by helicopter from Cid Harbour in the Whitsunday Islands on Thursday afternoon after being bitten on the upper leg.

The RACQ CQ Rescue has confirmed the patient is a woman, not a man as initially reported.

Authorities said the extent of the woman's injuries mean she is lucky to be alive, mostly thanks to an emergency room doctor who happened to be on a nearby boat, and the rapid assistance of a medical response helicopter which was also nearby. Of these, two people died.

The Whitsundays is an island know for its glistening beaches, turquoise waters and colourful reefs on the coast of Queensland, making the area extremely popular with tourists.

"We don't normally go out and search for any sharks that may have been involved in a shark attack but due to the nature of these multiple attacks, Fisheries Queensland is going to deploy three drum lines in a bid to try and catch some of the sharks in that area".

"It is important to be aware that sharks inhabit the Queensland coastline, as well as estuaries, rivers, creeks, canals and streams - both saltwater and freshwater", the statement continued.

An RACQ CQ Rescue spokeswoman said the injured woman had been pulled out of the water by those on scene and was aboard a 36-foot yacht "bleeding profusely".

"(But) it is effective in reducing the overall number of sharks in the area, making it a safer place to swim.
