Republicans make counteroffer to Kavanaugh's accuser

Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh

Can the Senate Judiciary Committee enlist the FBI to investigate the claims of sexual assault brought by an accuser against Judge Brett Kavanaugh, nominee to the Supreme Court?

In a series of tweets, Trump threw into question the validity of Professor Christine Blasey Ford's accusations in the most direct way since the allegations against Kavanaugh came to light and said his Supreme Court nominee is "under assault by radical left wing politicians". Feinstein had received the letter earlier in the summer but maintains she held on disclosing it until after the Senate Judiciary Committee commenced confirmation hearings in an effort to comply with Ford's request for confidentiality.

Over the past several days, Republicans and the president alike have taken swings at the alleged victim, culminating today with a tweet from the president reading in part "if the attack on Dr. Ford was as bad as she says, charges would have been immediately filed with local Law Enforcement Authorities [sic]". "I ask that she bring those filings forward so that we can learn date, time, and place!" He said that Ford and her attorneys have until Friday to commit to appear at a hearing that could take place Monday about these allegations. He did not say how long he would wait for Ford "to decide if she wants to proceed". Kavanaugh will testify following Ford to be able to defend himself against her allegation.

Mr Trump hinted on Thursday that he was ready to fully back Mr Kavanaugh after he said the judge had been treated "very, very tough".

Specifically, Collins told a ME radio station that she believes in the Senate's responsibility to vet nominees for high offices like the Supreme Court position for which Kavanaugh has been nominated. "Why didn't someone call the Federal Bureau of Investigation 36 years ago?" he added. "So I thought that the president's tweet was completely inappropriate and wrong".

He said he was "disturbed" to hear that she had been facing threats and harassment but urged her to speak before the committee.

His approval by the Judiciary Committee and the Republican-majority Senateappeared to be an nearly certainty until The Washington Post published its interview with Ford, who is now a California psychology professor.

Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley has scheduled a hearing for Monday morning, and he and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have indicated Monday would be Ford's only chance to make her case. Her lawyers on Friday night defied a Judiciary Committee ultimate to giver her decision on whether she will testify next week. They also set up a table on the sidewalk to collect notes from people urging Collins to vote against approving Kavanaugh. "And by the way, women are for that more than anyone would understand". She doesn't want Kavanaugh in the same room, her attorney told the panel's staff in a 30-minute call that also touched on security concerns and others issues, according to a Senate aide.

The lawyer's statement repeats earlier reports of threats to Prof Ford and her family's safety, adding that she is "currently unable to go home".

Grassley rebuffed other Ford requests, including calling additional witnesses. Why didn't any of this come up at Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing? She said Ford's attorneys should respond quickly, but did not directly answer whether she disagreed with scheduling a vote for Monday if the deadline isn't met. Senate Democrats, meanwhile, say that no matter what Republicans do, they intend to question Blasey themselves.
