Rahul Gandhi is trying to help Pakistan: Ravi Shankar Prasad

Not Involved In Choice Of Indian Partners For Rafale Deal Says French Govt

Modi, who stormed to power in 2014 promising to rid India of deep-seated corruption, had no "moral right" to remain in power after the revelations from Hollande, senior Congress leader Anand Sharma said.

April 10, 2015: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Paris in April and announces government's decision to buy 36 Rafale fighters in flyaway condition, citing critical operational requirements of the Indian Air Force. "But you (Prime Minister Modi) are not speaking anything", he added.

Referring to Modi having earlier described himself as a "chowkidar (watchman)' Gandhi said he had given a 'free gift" of Rs 30,000 crore to his industrialist friend.

Expressing surprise over Modi's silence, he said: "This gentleman is not just any person". Ahead of India's 2019 general election, in which Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party will campaign on its pro-poor policies and economic development record, the allegations of impropriety against the government could provide fuel to opposition critiques that the prime minister is too cozy with tycoons. "We are absolutely convinced that PM of India is corrupt". This question is now clearly settled in the minds of the Indian people that desh ka chowkidaar chor hain. "I have nothing to do with it, I have not prompted them, not led him, not told them, I have not instructed them, I have not done any match-making whatsoever, so why am I be [sic] anxious by what he would tell me?" I am trying to protect your office.

"The French government is in no manner involved in the choice of Indian industrial partners who have been, are being, or will be selected by French companies", the French government said in its statement. There should be a JPC probe.

It interviewed Hollande on phone in which he said: "I intervened in this affair (Rafale) with the two prime ministers, to say that I was keen for this negotiation".

The Congress president said Modi should clear his stand over the issue. So, the whole thing is to save the Prime Minister. Ruling out the demand for a JPC probe, he told a press conference that it can not be done merely to satisfy the ego of "an arrogant and ill-informed leader repeating lies after lies". "That's why, in other circumstances, this group could not be avoided in spite of everything", Mediapart on Friday quoted Hollande as saying. It is none of our concern, he added.

The offset contract ensures investment by the original equipment supplier i.e. Dassault Aviation, in India, in as much as they make purchases from Indian companies to the extent of fifty percent (in this case). This was at a time when Anil, perhaps, had an inkling of the truncated Rafale deal in the offing.

He also alleged that Rahul was "helping" Pakistan, and was playing into the hands of India's "enemies", by demanding that the government reveal the full price details of the deal.

CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury said: "This Rafale deal is a scam if there was one. One should not make allegations without proof". "We can t expect anything else from Rahul Gandhi".

Hollande told AFP, the French news agency, on the sidelines of a meeting in Canada on Friday that France "did not choose Reliance in any way".

"Rafale for Congress is "Rahul Firse Launch Abhiyan".

"Never before in the history of independent India has a party president used such words for a PM", he told a news conference on Saturday.

The Minister said that offset will help create jobs.

India's defence ministry wrote on Twitter that neither the Indian nor French government "had any say in the commercial decision".

The Congress's attacks on the government began within hours of the Mediapart story being published, with Gandhi tweeting on Friday that Modi had "personally negotiated & changed the #Rafale deal behind closed doors".
