Relief as Maldives strongman concedes defeat

Maldivian joint opposition presidential candidate Mohamed Solih speaks to the media at the end of the presidential election day in Male

Opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih declared victory in Maldives' presidential election after results reported by independent newspaper website mihaaru.com suggested he had an unassailable lead over strongman President Abdulla Yameen.

"I would like to call on President Yameen to accept the will of the people and begin a smooth transition of power as per the constitution".

Ahamed Fiasal, a 39-year-old IT business owner who voted for Solih, said the election result was surprising because "no one thought that Yameen would lose like this".

Mr Solih, 56, said voters had sent a "loud and clear message" following his surprise win. "Honourable Solih, won the election, having received 134,616 votes", the foreign ministry said after India and Sri Lanka welcomed Solih's victory in Sunday's poll.

A crackdown saw former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom - Yameen's half-brother - jailed along with the Chief Justice and another Supreme Court justice amid accusations of an imminent coup.

"Maldivian people have decided what they want".

Mohamed Nasheed, the head of Solih's Maldivian Democratic Party, said the vote would "bring the country back to the democratic path".

The Maldives Election Commission had set up as many as 472 ballot boxes, including at four polling stations overseas in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia and the United Kingdom.

The European Union had said that it was not sending election observers because the Maldives had failed to meet the basic conditions for monitoring.

During the election campaign, Yameen had presented himself as a Maldivian nationalist focused on economic development, pointing to infrastructure projects built during his term, including a 2km bridge linking Male to the worldwide airport that opened earlier this month.

Few foreign media organizations were allowed into the country to cover the election.

The government had used "vaguely worded laws to silence dissent and to intimidate and imprison critics", some of whom had been assaulted and even murdered, according to Human Rights Watch.

India's ties with the Maldives came under strain after Yameen declared Emergency in the country on February 5, following an order by the country's Supreme Court to release a group of Opposition leaders, who had been convicted in widely criticised trials.

India has followed and monitored the elections very closely.

Beijing loaned Yameen's government hundreds of millions of dollars for infrastructure projects like the new "China-Maldives Friendship Bridge", which opened in August.

President Yameen conceded defeat, stating that the people of the Maldives had made their decision and apologized to the nation.
