Rod Rosenstein heads to White House amid reports he will resign

DOJ Source Claims Rod Rosenstein Was Joking

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is heading to the White House expecting to be fired, sources tell Fox News, in the wake of a report that he suggested wearing a wire against President Trump and invoking the 25th Amendment to remove him from office a year ago.

Rosenstein talked a year ago about invoking the 25th Amendment and wearing a wire during Trump meetings, the N.Y. Times' Adam Goldman and Michael S. Schmidt reported last week.

CNN's Laura Jarrett reports that a source close to Rosentstein said the deputy attorney general expects to be fired, but has not offered his resignation.

Rosenstein strongly denied the allegations.

Mr Rosenstein, the No 2 Justice Department official, verbally resigned to White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, the report said, citing an unidentified source with knowledge of the matter.

An unidentified senior administration official said the Cabinet had discussed using that amendment - which can be used to oust the president if he is deemed unfit for office - in an anonymous New York Times op-ed this month.

Pompeo, who has been steadfastly loyal to Trump in public and who earlier headed the Central Intelligence Agency, said that the administration needed all staffers "engaged in helping achieve President Trump's mission".

Rosenstein is in charge of the Russian Federation investigation.

The White House is yet to comment on Rosenstein's departure.

Mr Rosenstein oversees special counsel Robert Mueller's Trump-Russia inquiry.

Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh and Hurricane Florence were the top names in news headlines this past week. The Justice Department also has drawn attention to other instances in which Mr. McCabe has made statements that later have been proved false. He was reportedly angry that a memo he wrote about James Comey was cited as grounds for firing the Federal Bureau of Investigation director.

Trump's former longtime fixer and attorney, his onetime campaign chairman, vice chairman, national security adviser and others have pleaded guilty or been convicted, although so far no one has been charged with conspiring directly with the Russian attack on the 2016 election.

Mr Rosenstein appointed Mr Mueller and oversees his investigation.

From the start the investigation has been wide-ranging.
