Trump vows to get rid of 'lingering stench' at Justice Department

President Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally Friday Sept. 21 2018 in Springfield Mo

"The deputy attorney general, Rod J. Rosenstein, suggested past year that he secretly record President Trump in the White House to expose the chaos consuming the administration, and he discussed recruiting cabinet members to invoke the 25th Amendment to remove Mr. Trump from office for being unfit", the Times reported.

Rosenstein initiated discussions about the U.S. Constitution's 25th Amendment, the Times and Post reported.

"Mr. Rosenstein made these suggestions in the spring of 2017 when Mr. Trump's firing of James B. Comey as F.B.I. director plunged the White House into turmoil", The New York Times reports.

Mr Rosenstein was also said to have claimed he might be able to persuade his boss, attorney general Jeff Sessions, and John Kelly, then secretary of homeland security and now Mr Trump's chief of staff, to make a 25th amendment attempt.

He did not directly mention Rosenstein, who is overseeing special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian involvement in the 2016 election. Rosenstein, a lifelong Republican, was an establishment choice to take over the critical No. 2 position running the day-to-day operations of the Justice Department.

"That person said the wire comment came in response to McCabe's own pushing for the Justice Department to open an investigation into the president. But you got some real bad ones". "But there is a lingering stench and we're going to get rid of that, too". "They're all gone", he said.

Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer said the Times story "must not be used as a pretext for the corrupt objective of firing Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein in order install an official who will allow the president to interfere with the special counsel's investigation".

The second meeting, later in the day, had more people present, they said, including other senior Justice Department officials and then-FBI attorney Lisa Page.

"This New York Times report must not be used as a pretext for the corrupt goal of firing Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein in order to install an official who will allow the president to interfere with the Special Counsel's investigation", Schumer wrote. Rosenstein was asked in the meeting if he was serious, and he said yes, but he did not mean for the wire comment to be taken seriously as a tactic to investigate Trump, the person said. Such a move from the president, which would carry strong echoes of the Watergate affair which brought down Richard Nixon, would likely push the United States to the brink of a constitutional crisis.

Like I said, it's explosive.

It is emphasized that the proposals of Rosenstein were not implemented, but he called the information "inaccurate and factually untrue".

"They're hoping he gets mad, that he gets sick and exhausted of it and that they can turn this politically into their version of a Friday Night Massacre", Hannity said Friday, adding that the "deep state is crumbling from within". He also allegedly tried to gather support in the cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment in order to remove the President for being unfit to perform his duties.

"Rod Rosenstein must be fired today", Fox News host Laura Ingrahm wrote on Twitter.

Friday's news reports threatened to cloud Rosenstein's fate at the Justice Department, with some conservatives calling for him to be fired immediately. "Now, I think there are grounds to fire Rosenstein, and put someone else in there, with minimal, if any, political fallout for Trump".
