Australian broadcaster ABC's board sacks managing director

ABC sacks Michelle Guthrie as Managing Director

The ABC board, which appointed Guthrie 2.5 years ago during the reign of former chair James Spigelman, today sacked her halfway through her five year contract, with current chair Justin Milne saying "her leadership style was not the style that we needed going forward".

She was given the benefit of the doubt, Faine said, and "most of us were excited ... that a woman clearly on top of new media" was taking the helm.

"It was their decision and their deliberations, I'm not privy to the deliberations".

He said Ms Guthrie had "been all but invisible" and when she was approached, all she would respond with "was all jargon".

And why did The Australian break the news, thus insinuating the ABC's employees weren't among the first o know?

The chairman praised Ms Guthrie's performance in relation to the ABC's adaptation to the digital environment.

Guthrie is considering her legal options. "That said, I think Michelle tried hard and was involved with government", he said. "This is entirely a board decision".

The former Google executive said at no time had her plan to modernise the ABC come under fire, and that she had been effective in delivering on her state goals of shaking up Aunty.

"At no point have any issues been raised with me about the transformation being undertaken, the Investing in Audiences strategy and my effectiveness in delivering against that strategy", Ms Guthrie said.

David Anderson, the ABC's director of entertainment will act as interim MD while a replacement is found.

Asked if he was among them, Mr Anderson said he was not.

"I want to see an ABC that's strong and doing its job and well run, and the board does as well", Morrison said.

"I want you to know that I am passionate about the ABC's goal, public broadcasting and providing valuable services to Australians every day", he wrote.

In an email sent to ABC staff, Mr Milne said "a change in leadership does not mean a change in strategy".

"Michelle challenged us in a lot of ways to be better, challenged us to free up more money for content and went about that over the last two-and-a-half years."

The national broadcaster says the board of directors resolved that it was "not in the best interests of the ABC for Ms Guthrie" to continue to lead the organisation.

Deputy Labor leader Tanya Plibersek said she was perplexed by the decision and the board's statements had not clarified it.
