US vows to up Iran pressure but says not after regime change

WATCH LIVE: Trump Speaks At The United Nations

Tensions with North Korea have eased since last year's General Assembly, when Trump called Kim Jong Un "rocket man," and threatened to "totally destroy" the country if it threatened the US or its allies.

He says the United States will never tell other nations how to live, work or worship - but says the us expects other nations to "honor America's sovereignty in return".

United States National Security Adviser John Bolton on Tuesday said Iran will have "hell to pay", if the USA, its citizens or allies are targeted, BBC reported.

The US leader said his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore in June had led to developments unimaginable only a few months ago.

Trump defended his decision to exit the 2015 Iranian nuclear accord signed under his predecessor Barack Obama and said that a USA campaign of "economic pressure" would turn back Islamic Republic's aggression. Trump said in a posting on Twitter. His tax reform is possibly the most historic action Trump has guided, which has helped many small businesses (and big businesses).

Trump had called Kim a "rocket man" bent on nuclear destruction in his United Nations speech previous year. Also: "We will not be governed by an worldwide body that is unaccountable to our own citizens".

The accord, negotiated under Democratic U.S. President Barack Obama, lifted most worldwide sanctions against Tehran in exchange for Iran curbing its nuclear programme.

The president - who threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea in his United Nations speech past year - is expected to employ a forceful tone toward the Islamic Republic, even if not as bellicose as he did toward Pyongyang.

"I think a lot of progress is being made", Trump said, although so far North Korea has shown little concrete action towards eliminating its illicit nuclear program.

In regard to Iran, the president called on world leaders to join the U.S.in isolating and sanctioning Tehran until the Islamic republic stops spreading terrorism and working to build a nuclear arsenal.

Trump also thanked the worldwide community for its support in the denuclearization campaign, singling out South Korean President Moon Jae-in, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Hours later, when asked by reporters about the laughter, Trump said, "Well, that was meant to get some laughter, but it was great".
