USA lambasts Iran as world leaders gather at the UN

"We had fun. That was not laughing at me".

President Donald Trump got some laughter when he addressed world leaders on Tuesday.

"We can not allow the world's leading sponsor of terrorism to possess the world's deadliest weapons", he said.

Trump added: "I'll be meeting with Chairman Kim in the very near future".

The United States and Iran have been at a standoff since Trump announced his decision to pull out of the 2015 nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers in May, pitting him against other signatories.

"We need to look at how the money is being funneled into Bahrain and how our banking institutions launder money", said Bahrain's ambassador.

Trump has withdrawn the USA from the Iran nuclear deal, the Paris climate accord and an Asia-Pacific trade pact, while imposing steep tariffs on both allies and adversaries.

He says the United States will never tell other nations how to live, work or worship - but says the US expects other nations to "honor America's sovereignty in return".

Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, addressing a group called United Against a Nuclear Iran, called the 2015 accord "the worst diplomatic debacle in American history" and had a warning for "the mullahs in Tehran".

Responding to a question about whether the harsh language that Trump and his top official have used about Iran might lead to war, Rouhani said Iran since the 1979 revolution "has been subjected to that type of language many times".

Trump attempted to drive a wedge between Iran's leadership and its people, days after an attack in southwestern Iran on a military parade killed 25 people and unsettled the country.

The clear message was that if Rouhani was to follow the path taken by Kim, to meet and pay homage to Trump, Iran could escape the isolation the U.S. administration is now trying to reimpose.

"Remaining members of the deal have taken very good steps forward but Iran has higher expectations", he said in a reference to Russia, China and European nations who have pledged to remain part of the deal.

He said the United States would help create a regional strategic alliance between Gulf nations and Jordan and Egypt, a move the United States sees as a bulwark against Iran.

On North Korea, Mr Trump called for sanctions to be strictly enforced against Pyongyang - a message directed at Russian Federation and China which are pushing for an easing of punitive measures to reward North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

Iran has not requested to speak at the council meeting, diplomats confirmed Tuesday although Rouhani will hold a press conference soon after it is due to end.

Mr Trump chose to pull the United States from the Iran deal, and defended that decision on Tuesday during his speech to the UN.

The two leaders are trying to arrange a second summit.

On Monday, the five remaining parties to the agreement - Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation - defiantly announced that they would set up a special payment system to continue trade and business ties with Iran.

"We did not and will not interfere in any country's domestic affairs".

Tehran accounts for about 5 percent of Tokyo's total crude oil imports.
