Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber both upset at Wuhan Open

Barty downs Wimbledon champ Kerber

Local favourite Wang dominated the match from the start, drawing cheers from spectators as she racked up her 14th straight win.

ASH Barty has an injury battle to wage if she is to capitalise fully on being the only seed left in the $2.7 million WTA Wuhan tournament in China.

But Pavlyuchenkova fought back to force a deciding set, in which Barty broke serve in the critical final game to seal the win in two hours, seven minutes.

"After the emergence of Li Na, I think we are on the rise", the world No. 34 said.

"I would like to say that she's a tricky player because she's playing slice, lobs, with spin".

She won her second at the Guangzhou Open last week and on Wednesday (Sept 26), roared on by adoring crowds, became the first home-grown player to reach the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open as she extended her win-loss streak on Chinese soil this year to 13-1.

"I missed a lot of really easy balls".

She will play China's Qiang Wang for a spot in the semifinals.

Aryna Sabalenka stands in her way next, the in-form 20-year-old beating Dominika Cibulkova 7-5 6-3.

Wang, in contrast, was ruthless, recording six breaks of serve to triumph as she punished her opponent's 37 unforced errors.

The unpredictable nature of this year's Wuhan Open meant that 16th seed Ashleigh Barty was the highest ranked player still in the competition at the quarterfinal stage, and the Australian lived up to her billing, defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2, 5-7, 6-4. "Certainly would have been nicer to get it done in straights today", Barty said. "I'm so happy that I am on this level".

In-form Barty is now ranked 17th in the world, and a strong finish in Wuhan - a WTA Premier 5 tournament with 900 points for the victor - could help her inch up the rankings before the end of the season.

She will take on Anett Kontaveit - who knocked out Katerina Siniakova 6-4, 6-4 - in the first semi-final on Friday.
