Hundreds of flights cancelled as typhoon approaches Japan

Japan Meteorological Agency model of Trami's path over next three days

About 36,000 people were taking shelter in temporary evacuation centres as Trami crossed Japan overnight with strong winds and heavy rains after making landfall around the western city of Tanabe at 9pm (AEST) on Sunday.

In Amami, Kagoshima Prefecture, an 11-meter-high lighthouse at a Naze Port pier was apparently knocked down and washed away into the sea by strong winds and high waves, according to the Amami Coast Guard Office.

Two more people were reported missing, and more than 120 people were injured in the powerful storm, public broadcaster NHK said. The airport only fully reopened on September 21.

Typhoon Trami, packing gusts of a maximum 162 kilometers (100 miles) per hour near its center, was in the Pacific spiraling slowly towards Japan's southern islands.

Typhoon Trami, the 24th of the season, shut down critical transport infrastructure and caused widespread damage across the country.

Images received by Stars and Stripes from around the island revealed devastation of all sorts: Flooding caused by storm surge along the coastline, damaged vessels, overturned vehicles, trees, power lines and branches blown down and buildings damaged and collapsed.

The storm's strength prompted rail authorities to take the highly unusual step of cancelling Sunday night train services in Tokyo, one of the world's busiest networks.

More than 750,000 homes lost power. Tokyo's train lines announced they were shutting down after 8 p.m. local time.

The Japanese meteorological agency warned the typhoon would bring strong winds and downpours, which could trigger landslides and floods as well as lightning strikes and tornados across the nation.

Deadly record rains also hit western Japan earlier this year and the country sweltered through one of the hottest summers on record.

All this comes on the heels of a country still reeling from one of the hottest summers on record, deadly rains that inundated central and western Japan, the strongest typhoon to hit the region in 25 years in Typhoon Jebi and a magnitude-6.6 natural disaster on Hokkaido that killed 40.

And last month, a magnitude-6.6 quake rocked the northern island of Hokkaido, sparking landslides and killing more than 40 people.
