A Facebook Breach Let Hackers Access Tinder, Instagram And Spotify

Facebook reveals security incident affecting 50 million users

The year 2018 has been a tough sail for Facebook. The case would likely center on whether Facebook took appropriate steps to safeguard its user data before the breach, it added.

Facebook is racing to provide more information to European regulators about a major security breach affecting an estimated 50 million user accounts, with the threat of major GDPR fines hanging over the firm. Surprisingly, Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook's COO were also affected by the attack.

The Facebook- Cambridge Analytica scandal opened the can of worms and now the new breach is raising several new questions on the way Facebook functions.

"It's clear that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook's code", vice president of product management Guy Rosen said in a blog post.

A breakdown of how Facebook spotted the breach is available in this ZDNet article, here. So, the next time you use Facebook, you have to login again.

Second, any accounts on other platforms that use Facebook verification are also at risk.

The CEO admitted that "View As" feature in Facebook, which had some malfunction, must have played the spoilsport role.

So what happened? In short, the attackers found a way to trick Facebook into issuing them "access tokens" - basically, digital keys - that let them access other users' accounts as if they were that user.

It is not a surprise that Facebook was hit with a class-action lawsuit after announcing its security breach on Friday.

If you have an access token, you don't need to enter your username and password - because it means you're already logged into the website.

What is the security token?

As a result of the access token issue, Facebook forced 90 million of its users to log back into the social networking site on the morning of September 28.

When did this breach occur?

It remains unclear who was behind the attack, and whether specific persons were targeted. It stemmed from a change they made to the video uploading feature in July 2017, which impacted "View As".

Around 50 million Facebook account has already been affected and almost 40 million are at risk.

Money Guru broke down the £744.30 grand total and found that a PayPal account was the most expensive item on sale at £258 (about P18,200)-understandable considering PayPal accounts tend to be linked to either debit or credit card accounts.

People are anxious their personal information could have been stolen.

What is Facebook doing to fix the bug?

After detecting the breach, Facebook has fixed the vulnerability, informed law enforcement, and temporarily turned off the "View As" feature.

"It's always the company's responsibility to identify when United Kingdom citizens have been affected as part of a data breach and take steps to reduce any harm to consumers". Facebook has logged out 90 million Facebook users from their accounts.

Identifying that overlap could allow the companies to examine if affected Facebook users' data was also compromised on their platforms.

Simply put, you can log out or initiate a security audit on your device and account.
