Google to stream Assassin's Creed for free in test

Google's Project Stream lets you play Assassin's Creed Odyssey in Chrome

Starting October 5, Google Project Stream will start streaming Assassin's Creed Odyssey and will be playable through Chrome browser.

Google Project Stream is a technical test that is created to "push the limits " of streaming "with one of the most demanding applications for streaming-a blockbuster video game". If Project Stream works as advertised, with imperceptible latency between controller input and in-game reaction, it'll be huge contender to similar game streaming services like PlayStation Now and Vortex.

The biggest advantage of streaming, as opposed to physical discs or downloads, is that it removes hardware barriers for games. The quality of this official recording doesn't look great, though it's tough to say how much that will show in the actual streams.

You must have or be willing to get a Google Account, a Ubisoft account, and Chrome.

While sadly limited to American sign-ups only and requiring a 25 megabit connection at minimum, Google are taking sign-ups for Project Stream now, and plan to begin limited testing on October 5th.

But it admitted there were technical challenges involved in streaming graphically rich content via a browser. Google notes that open spots are limited, and there's no guarantee of selection. If you want to sign up, you can do so on the Project Stream website.

'When streaming TV or movies, consumers are comfortable with a few seconds of buffering at the start, but streaming high-quality games requires latency measured in milliseconds, with no graphic degradation'. Are you going to apply to the test?

This won't be the only version of Assassin's Creed Odyssey available via a streaming service.

Google has been rumoured to be working on its own gaming system in the past.
