Trump court nominee's former classmate says he lied about his drinking

Senate Judiciary Committee member Sen. Jeff Flake speaks with committee colleagues during a hearing in Washington on Sept. 28 2018 after requested a delay for a floor vote to allow for an FBI investigation

Arizona Senator Jeff Flake, a key figure in the battle over Judge Brett Kavanaugh's increasingly fraught Supreme Court nomination, said Monday in Boston that the FBI should conduct a "real investigation" of sexual assault allegations leveled at the appellate jurist.

Several US media outlets over the weekend said that the scope of the investigation was being constrained by the White House, reporting that one of Mr Kavanaugh's accusers, Julie Swetnick, would not be interviewed.

"I thought it was going to be an investigation, but instead it seems it's just an alibi for Republicans to vote for Kavanaugh", the unnamed Yale classmate told the New Yorker.

"I guess I want to say, 'Thank you, ' " Walsh said. "We need to show him that wherever he goes, there will be survivors, and they'll hold his feet to the fire".

They include Mark Judge, a high school friend of Kavanaugh's who Ford has said was in the room when a drunken Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her. Judge has denied misconduct allegations.

While saying that youthful drinking should not condemn a person for life, Ludington said he was concerned about Kavanaugh's statements under oath before the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The prosecutor said Ford has offered inconsistent accounts and has "struggled to recall important recent events relating to her allegations", which "raises further questions about her memory".

Mr Trump ordered the FBI to reopen Kavanaugh's background investigation, delaying a final vote on the nomination. I don't think there's anybody in America who would condone that.

In remarks he made Saturday before heading to a MAGA rally in West Virginia, Trump said the investigation was expected to be concluded within a week's time. and conclude in less than a week.

Democratic Senator Chris Coons told reporters he was in discussions with the White House on the probe.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the panel's top Democrat, wrote to White House counsel Donald McGahn and FBI Director Christopher Wray and asked that the committee be provided with a copy of the written directive the White House sent to the FBI, as well as the names of any additional witnesses or evidence if the probe is expanded.

Sen. Susan Collins said Sunday she is confident in the investigation and "that the FBI will follow up on any leads that result from the interviews".

"For the past year, I've been speaking about the condition of our democracy because my conscience has required me to do it", Flake said.

Supreme Court nominations require Senate confirmation.

Officials insisted that they were not "micromanaging" the new one-week review of Kavanaugh's background and insisted that Republican senators were dictating the inquiry's scope.

Kavanaugh has denied Ramirez's allegation.

It's not now clear whether the Republican leadership has secured enough votes to ensure Judge Kavanaugh's confirmation.

Graham famously slammed Democrats last week during Kavanaugh's testimony on his sexual assault allegations.

In a five-page memo released Sunday, Rachel Mitchell listed nine major problems with Ford's testimony, finding the case against Kavanaugh even weaker than a "he said, she said" dispute. Jeff Flake insisted that the Federal Bureau of Investigation be allowed up to a week to investigate allegations against Kavanaugh before the full Senate weighs in on confirmation.

Republicans have 51 seats in the closely divided 100-member Senate and could afford to lose one vote, but not two or more on confirmation.

Ms Ramirez alleged Kavanaugh exposed himself to her at a party in the early 1980s. Many see her as the most likely Republican to flip and vote against Kavanaugh.

The FBI is expected to spend the coming days investigating the sexual misconduct claims against Kavanaugh.
