Melania Trump praises Kavanaugh, laments attention on her clothes

Breaking Flake Is Officially a 'Yes' on Kavanaugh

Brett Kavanaugh was sworn in as the 114th justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, after a wrenching debate over sexual misconduct and judicial temperament that shattered the Senate, captivated the nation and ushered in an acrimonious new level of polarization - now encroaching on the court that the 53-year-old judge may well swing rightward for decades to come.

A campaign pushing for President Donald Trump to be impeached has received a big boost from the controversy plaguing his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. Support from Ms Collins and Mr Manchin would give Kavanaugh at least 51 votes.

Murkowski appears to be the sole Republican senator expected to vote against Kavanaugh's confirmation, eliciting criticism from some conservatives.

She later clarified she was "not making any announcements" but was "deeply disappointed in Senator Collins's vote for Kavanaugh". Kavanaugh denies the allegation, while she has stood by her testimony.

The West Virginia Democrat declined comment to reporters as he boarded a Senate subway, saying he would release a statement on the Kavanaugh nomination later in the day. While she was among a handful of Republicans who helped sink Trump's quest to obliterate President Barack Obama's health care law past year, this time she proved instrumental in delivering a triumph to Trump.

The FBI submitted its investigation early this week, which was then sent to the Senate for the lawmakers to have a look at it and have an informed decision.

"I believed he was going to rape me", Ford said about Kavanaugh.

"November is coming", said one of their banners. A formal investiture ceremony will take place at a later date, the Supreme Court also said.

Vice President Mike Pence planned to be available Saturday in case his tie-breaking vote was needed.

It was not clear that Kavanaugh would have the votes for confirmation until Collins said in a Senate floor speech that she would support his nomination. He expressed empathy for sexual assault victims, but said that after factoring in the Federal Bureau of Investigation report, "I have found Judge Kavanaugh to be a qualified jurist who will follow the Constitution".

That would mark an anti-climactic finale to a clash fought against the backdrop of the #MeToo movement and Mr Trump's unyielding support of the nominee, and opposing forces that left Mr Kavanaugh's fate in doubt for weeks.

Kavanaugh's confirmation leaves the Senate traumatized with Republicans and Democrats as estranged as at any time in recent memory, reflecting the cavernous divides in the country itself during a presidency that has ignited rare political passions. Kavanaugh, who now sits on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals and previously worked for the independent counsel's office during the investigation of President Bill Clinton, described opposition to his nomination as "revenge on behalf of the Clintons".

The lone Republican to oppose the nomination was Sen. "But it just may be that in my view he's not the right man for the court at this time", she said Friday after the vote.

The group of about 150 who somehow got around the newly-erected barricade were among about 2,000 protesters - majority women - outside the building where senators were to vote mid-afternoon.

"It's a lot of work - maybe they don't want to do it", said Grassley.

Demonstrators held signs calling Kavanaugh a bad nominee because of sexual assault allegations against him and saying the selection process seemed to be biased against women.

Brett Kavanaugh's elevation to the US Supreme Court is all but assured.
