President Donald Trump Responds to Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court Confirmation

Watch live: Final Senate vote on Kavanaugh nomination

The two-vote margin is one of the narrowest ever for a Supreme Court nominee.

Democrats hope that the roll call, exactly a month from elections in which House and Senate control are in play, will do the opposite, prompting infuriated women and liberals to oust Republicans.

At the September 27 Senate hearing on Ford's allegations against him, Kavanaugh fought back with a blistering partisan attack in which he described the allegations against him as a "calculated and orchestrated political hit" masterminded by the Democrats and left-wing groups.

At the White House on Sunday, Trump lauded Collins' hard work and "impassioned" speech on the Senate floor Friday announcing how she would vote.

"Judge Kavanaugh will be an outstanding Supreme Court Justice", said Sen. Mrs. Ashley Kavanaugh holds the Bible, Oct. 6, 2018.

Ten law professors from Iowa opposed Kavanaugh's confirmation based on his combative testimony September 27, signing onto a letter signed by more than 2,400 legal scholars that was sent to the Senate Thursday.

"Change must come from where change in America always begins: the ballot box", said Democratic leader Chuck Schumer of NY, looking ahead to November.

The justices themselves made a quiet show of solidarity. Kavanaugh replaces Kennedy, who was widely known as the court's "swing vote".

Still, Kagan noted the night before that Kennedy has been "a person who found the center" and "it's not so clear we'll have that" now.

Protestors in the gallery rose one by one, many of them wearing black, and began shouting.

Hundreds were arrested on Capitol Hill this week - including several dozen in the hours leading to the final vote.

"He will be a great justice of the Supreme Court". Eleven Democrats voted for Thomas, while two Republicans opposed his confirmation.

The allegations drew new scrutiny to Kavanaugh's sworn testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he claimed he had never been accused of sexually inappropriate conduct, as well as claims by Kavanaugh that he did not binge drink in high school and college.

Senators sat at their desks during Saturday's roll call, rising when it was their turn to vote. Hangers and worse have been delivered to their offices, a Roe v. Wade reference. U.S. Capitol Police began arresting some of them.

Kavanaugh worked under Bush as an associate counsel and later a staff secretary.

"Today's vote to confirm Judge Kavanaugh is a vote against women and sexual assault survivors". At one point in the hearing, Kavanaugh blamed a Clinton-revenge conspiracy for the accusations against him.

Manchin expressed empathy for sexual assault victims. I believe her. I am ashamed at the Republican's treatment of Dr. Ford, and the rushed, incomplete investigation that came out of it. Democrats dismissed the truncated report as insufficient. A few Republicans stuck around, gathering to thank Sen.

After her testimony, Trump agreed to let the FBI investigate Ford's claims, but only for a week.

The vote gave Trump his second appointee to the court, pleasing conservative voters who might have revolted against GOP leaders had Kavanaugh's nomination flopped.

Fifty senators voted in favour, with 48 against, to appoint 53-year-old Mr Kavanaugh to the court for life.

As the Senate tried to recover from its charged atmosphere, Murkowski's move offered a moment of civility. You put yourself through so much and I want you to know it wasn't in vain. These senators were Susan Collins (R-Maine), Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), Joe Manchin (D-W.V.), and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska).

"We have differing views about the other qualifications of Judge Kavanaugh", the letter read.

At a hearing marked by bitter partisan acrimony, Kavanaugh was forced to defend himself against an allegation of sexual assault dating back to when he was a teenager.

The Senate is expected to confirm Kavanaugh on Saturday.

On the Senate floor Saturday, Sen.
