Trump predicts Democrats will vote for Republicans because of Kavanaugh stance

Protesters against US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh demonstrate at the high court in Washington ahead of his confirmation

President Donald Trump apologized to Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh for "the awful pain and suffering" he and his family were "forced to endure" during his confirmation process, at a ceremonial swearing-in event at the White House on Monday evening.

U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Brett Kavanaugh speaks during his ceremonial public swearing-in as U.S. President Donald Trump and Kavanaugh's wife Ashley and daughters Liza and Margaret, and retired Justice Anthony Kennedy look on in the East Room of the White House in Washington, U.S., October 8, 2018.

Last week, the Federal Bureau of Investigation completed a report on sexual misconduct allegations against Mr Kavanaugh - but the findings have not been released to the public.

Justice Kavanaugh rejected the accusations and Ms. Blasey Ford was unable to offer any witnesses who could corroborate her story; indeed those whom she named instead denied it.

Mr Trump said Democrats had "tortured" Mr Kavanaugh and his family.

Mr Trump says Democrats will lose in the 6 November congressional elections, which will shape the remainder of his presidency.

The ceremonial follow-up event is fairly unusual for new justices.

Trump's ceremony speech hammered a theme he has been hitting on all week: hoping to energize Republicans by attacking Democrats for opposing Kavanaugh.

"The Supreme Court is an institution of law".

Without mentioning the sexual assault allegations, he touted his record of promoting women - and the fact he has become the first justice to have an all-female staff. "And now they want to impeach him".

Earlier on Monday he said "evil people" had brought up the allegations, even though it was unclear if he was referring to the accusers, their lawyers or Democratic lawmakers. "And he toughed it out", Trump said at the International Association of Chiefs of Police meeting.

Since justices serve lifetime appointments, the political consequences are likely to last long beyond Trump's administration.

"Although the Senate confirmation process tested me as it has tested others, it did not change me", he said.

Now that Mr Kavanaugh is confirmed, the nine-justice court, which rules on constitutional questions, is expected to take a more reliably conservative approach.

President Trump gave brief remarks praising Kavanaugh and thanking several Republican senators for their support of his nomination. McConnell called the current partisan divide a "low point", but he blamed Democrats.
