South Africa's anti-graft body to investigate finance minister

Nhlanhla Nene is SA's minister of finance. Again

President Cyril Ramaphosa said he has accepted the resignation "in the spirit of good governance".

He previously served as minister of finance from May 25, 2014, until his controversial removal by former President Jacob Zuma on December 9, 2015.

Mboweni, like mineral resources minister Gwede Mantashe, has been appointed in terms of rules which permit two ministers from outside parliament.

Nene revealed for the first time when he testified before the Commission of inquiry into state capture, that he's had several private meetings with the Guptas at their residence and business premises.

The Guptas have been accused of having improper influence over former president Jacob Zuma and his executive, as well as control of operations at state owned enterprises, which they used to loot billions of rand from South African taxpayers.

"I am human too, I do make mistakes, including those of poor judgement", Nene said.

Former central bank chief Tito Mboweni will take over from Nene.

Zuma and the Guptas have denied any wrongdoing.

"It is a measure of his character and his commitment to the national interest that he has taken this decision to resign in the wake of errors of judgment‚ even though he has not been implicated in acts of wrongdoing".

Zuma ruled for nearly nine years before the governing African National Congress forced him to quit in February and replaced him with his 65-year-old deputy and party leader, Ramaphosa.

It had received a battering under Mr Zuma's presidency. The announcement led to a strengthening of the South African currency, the rand, which had weakened after earlier reports of Mr. Nene's likely resignation.

Mboweni, who went into exile during apartheid, trained as an economist and served for four years as labor minister in former President Nelson Mandela's cabinet after apartheid ended in 1994.

In February, Mboweni tweeted that he was "not available for Minister of Finance". Nene said during his testimony to the inquiry he was sacked in December 2015 for refusing to agree to Zuma's plans to spend billions of dollars on new nuclear plants.

Mboweni clearly loves the social media platform, giving people a glimpse into his life, political thoughts and sense of humour.
