Concerned about reports of Saudi journalist missing in Turkey

Report Saudi journalist killed in Turkey

Khashoggi, a regime critic and prominent journalist in Saudi Arabia, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2. Turkey has demanded answers about what happened to the exile in the building, and the government has summoned the Saudi ambassador twice to get them.

On Wednesday, the Post published a column by Khashoggi's fiancée, Hatice Cengiz.

Sen. Chris Murphy is calling for at least a temporary halt in USA support for the Saudi-led bombing campaign against Iranian-backed rebels in Yemen.

Khashoggi, a prominent Saudi journalist, vanished October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. This is a claim denied by the Gulf kingdom's officials.

Khashoggi, a former Saudi government adviser, had been living in self-imposed exile in the United States since past year fearing possible arrest.

"A joint working team between Turkey and Saudi Arabia will be formed to investigate the case in all its aspects", he said.

President Trump has said he'll talk to Saudi Arabian officials about the missing journalist at some point. But after three hours I was overcome with fear and concern.

"I am following the [issue], and we will inform the world of the outcome" of the official probe, Erdogan told reporters in Ankara. "Right now, nobody knows anything about it".

Over the past year Khashoggi used his platform as a Washington Post columnist to criticize the policies of Saudi Arabia's powerful young crown prince, from the war in Yemen to the arrest of women's rights advocates.

Turkish officials later announced that they believed Khashoggi was murdered inside of the consulate and that his body was transported out of the building.

Vice President Mike Pence echoed the president's remarks and said the worldwide community "deserves answers".

The interview briefly touched on the Khashoggi case, with the crown prince stating he had no knowledge of the journalist's fate or whereabouts and that he had left the Istanbul consulate.

"If true, this is a horrific crime, the assassination of a journalist in his own country's consulate on foreign soil - something without precedent in modern times", the newspaper wrote on Monday. Donald Trump commented on the disappearance in his press conference yesterday, saying "I do nor like it" and expressing hope that the issue will "sort itself out".

He told her to call an adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan if he did not return. "The consulate officials can not save themselves by simply saying, 'He has left, '" Erdogan told a news conference in Budapest, where he is on an official visit. He added that Saudi Arabia's agreeing to Turkey's request to search the consulate would "at best reduce tensions between the two countries".

A Turkish diplomatic source confirmed the Saudi envoy was "invited" to the ministry on Sunday in Ankara and was met by deputy foreign minister Sedat Onal.

"The consulate building will be searched in the framework of the investigation", Aksoy said in a written statement.

Trump, and son-in-law Jared Kushner, have been personally close to Mohammed bin Salman, since turning to Saudi Arabia as a pivotal ally in the Middle East against Iran.
