Met Office names intense low-pressure area - Storm Callum

Strong winds associated with Storm Ali last month caused damage and disruption all over the country

On Wednesday, Met Éireann confirmed that Ireland would be battered by wind and rain from Storm Callum, issuing an orange wind warning for several counties and a yellow weather warning for others.

"You can check our website or call Floodline on 0345 988 1188 for any flood warnings that may be in place and keep an eye on weather reports and local news for details of any disruption in your area".

Met Éireann has named an intense area of low-pressure, which will pass to the west of Ireland, northern England and Scotland during Friday, Storm Callum.

Strong winds of up to 130 kilometres per hour are forecast, while winds of up to 110 kilometres per hour are being forecast for inland counties.

A Status Orange weather warning will come into effect for 13 counties tonight.

After the worst of the wind has swept the country, the tail-end of Hurricane Leslie will bring rainfall, raising the prospect of coastal and river flooding. There is a high risk of flooding and damage in coastal areas.

However, it is Friday (October 12) which will see the full force of Storm Callum.

A road that was closed after an accident at Slieve Gullion forest park near Newry, Co Down, where a contractor working for Northern Ireland Water died after he was hit by a falling tree as Storm Ali wreaked havoc across Ireland.

Arriva is also cancelling services between Llandudno Junction and Blaenau Ffestiniog on both Friday and Saturday.

South Wales is bracing itself for a two-day deluge that's expected to cause flash floods and travel chaos. Even though the high winds will be the main concern, a spell of heavy and possibly thundery rain will occur too, making for an extremely windy and wet start, with squally conditions associated with the secondary cold front as it tracks north-eastwards up across the country.

Ms Donnelly said there would be a risk of flooding in places.

"We are urging people to take the necessary precautions", Ms Lowe said.
