Florida: Grim search through ruined landscape after Michael

Graphic shows the predicted wind speeds over the next five days caused by Hurricane Michael 2c x 4 inches 96.3 mm x 101

Entire roofs were torn away in the town of about 1,000 people, now a scene of utter devastation.

Numerous injured in Florida were taken to hard-hit Panama City, 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Mexico Beach. Residents are walking through piles of debris, some assessing the damage and others trying to find food.

In Cuba, it dropped more than 10 inches (27 centimetres) of rain in places, flooding fields, damaging roads, knocking out power and destroying some homes in the western province of Pinar del Rio.

Long said the storm posed a direct threat to people who ignored warnings and evacuation orders on the coastlines, particularly given the threat of storm surge capable of tearing apart and flattening buildings.

Meanwhile, thousands of National Guard troops, law enforcement officers and rescue teams still had much to do in the hardest hit area: Florida's Panhandle. The home was found smashed, with no sign of the woman.

O Virgin, Star of the Sea, our beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem, where a stormless eternity awaits us. "Do you think it would have floated away?" "I just have to be hopeful that (the town) will be rebuilt and fixed". "You want to check on things, and begin the recovery process", Scott said.

Hundreds of thousands of people remain without electricity in Florida, Georgia and Virginia, and officials say it could be weeks before power is fully restored.

- Storm riders: Roughly 375,000 people in Florida warned to evacuate; many refused, including 285 people in Mexico Beach where Michael made landfall.

"Luckily we did not get a surge", Tenbrunson said of his home.

In one community, Panama City, most homes were still standing, but no property was left undamaged. Aluminum siding was shredded to ribbons.

Four deaths occurred in one Florida county, including a man who was killed when a tree crashed through his home.

Hundreds of residents were rescued Thursday from cars, apartments and homes flooded by rushing water. Some houses were simply wiped off of their foundations, with wreckage and sand covering the ground and streets. Pine trees were stripped and snapped off about 20 feet high. No patients were hurt, the hospital said.

Michael then blew through Virginia, where authorities said five people were killed. They relied on emergency radios to make contact with first responders. She was safe until a carport came crashing through the roof.

In North Carolina, a 38-year-old man died when a large tree fell on his vehicle Thursday on USA 64 east of Statesville, Iredell County Fire Marshal David Souther said.

Authorities reported 11 deaths as of Friday, with Virginia's state medical examiner ruling four drownings and the firefighter's death were storm-related.

Michael has left over 1,600,000 households and businesses without power across Florida, Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia. Power outages were concentrated in central North Carolina's Piedmont region, where motorists had to be rescued Thursday from cars trapped by high water.

"We are still in the heat of search and rescue and do not have any information at this time", said Catie Feeney of the Bay County Emergency Services agency.

By Tuesday, most models showed Beaufort County east of the path, but a tropical storm warning was issued.

After devastating coastal communities in the Florida Panhandle, the remnants of the storm, now downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, killed five people as it passed through the USA state of Virginia.
