Newspaper: Turkey has audio of writer’s killing

Turkish sources believe Jamal Khashoggi was killed inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Wednesday that "there would be hell to pay" if missing journalist and Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi was killed by the Saudi government, as Turkish officials have claimed.

These were the toughest comments coming out of the Trump administration since the mysterious disappearance of the journalist, who Turkish authorities suspect was abducted and murdered by the Saudis.

But Mr Trump told reporters at the White House the United States would be "punishing itself" by halting military sales to Saudi Arabia even if it is proven that Khashoggi was killed inside the country's consulate in Istanbul. He also said the USA was working "very closely" with Turkey, "and I think we'll get to the bottom of it".

"Although this incident could potentially fuel a political crisis between the two nations, let us not lose sight of the human aspect of what happened", Cengiz writes. He served as an adviser to senior Saudi officials.

The US president also said he wanted to bring Khashoggi's fiancee, Hatice Cengiz, to the White House.

Diplomatic sources have now told the BBC that both US Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and UK International Trade Secretary Liam Fox might not attend the event, being hosted by the kingdom's Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman to promote his reform agenda.

The Turkish government hasn't provided formal evidence that could back up the spate of anonymous allegations that the Saudi writer was killed inside the Istanbul consulate.

"We're demanding everything. We want to see what's going on", Trump said.

"The initial assessment of the Turkish police is that Mr. Khashoggi has been killed at the consulate of Saudi Arabia in Istanbul".

The team members departed immediately after Khashoggi's disappearance. A video caption says seven other men checked in at another nearby hotel at different times. He also added, the free world deserves answers. "Violence against journalists should be condemned, but at this point, we don't know what happened".

The Washington Post reported Wednesday evening that USA intelligence intercepts outlined a Saudi plan to detain Khashoggi. "So I think we have to get to the bottom of it".

In a statement, the SNPM voiced deep concern over Khashoggi's disappearance after entering the Saudi Consulate, calling on Moroccan journalists to join a planned rally outside the Saudi Embassy in Rabat on October 25 to pile pressure for knowing the fate of the veteran journalist. Khsashoggi was a prominent critic of the Saudi regime.

Corker tells The Associated Press that information he has reviewed suggests that Jamal Khashoggi was killed on October 2, the day he went to the Saudi consulate in Istanbul.

"At this time I implore President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump to shed light on Jamal's disappearance", wrote Cengzi.

A Turkish official told the New York Times on the condition of anonymity that a team of Saudi agents killed the 59-year-old writer within two hours of his arrival at the consulate, and then dismembered his body with a bone saw they had brought for the goal.

Mr Erdogan was quoted by Turkish media today as telling journalists flying with him back home from a visit to Hungary that "we can not remain silent to such an incident".

Saudi officials maintain he left the consulate shortly after entering, though it has failed to provide evidence to back that up, such as video footage.

A Turkish security source had previously told Reuters that the 15 Saudis, including some officials, left Turkey later the same day.

"Silence, denials and delays are not acceptable".

"If, as they say, this bad murder didn't happen then where is Jamal Khashoggi?".
