Remains of fetuses and infants found at second Detroit funeral home

Dozens of remains were found inside a Detroit funeral home Friday

The remains were taken from Perry Funeral Home Friday and turned over to state investigators.

Details about why the remains were being stored at Perry Funeral Home and the former Cantrell Funeral Home, or whether the cases are in any way related, weren't immediately available.

As many as 36 infants and foetuses were found stored in boxes, and 27 in freezers.

The Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs said Friday it suspended the mortuary science licenses of Perry Funeral Home and its director, The Detroit News reported.

About 63 fetuses and infants have been removed from a Detroit funeral home, the second facility where remains have been improperly disposed.

Investigators originally found the remains of 11 stillborn babies concealed in a funeral home's "false ceiling", after they received an anonymous letter tipping them off.

This is a developing story.

"I have never seen anything like this in my 41-and-a-half years [on the force]".

Craig said the police department's phone was "ringing off the hook" since the original discovery of 11 remains last week, adding that it's possible there are more remains at different establishments yet to be found.

"I can't say that with certainty", Craig told reporters, shortly after leaving a meeting with Federal Bureau of Investigation and state investigators. A state oversight agency has closed the west side funeral home. However, Detroit police chief James Craig said no connection between the two cases had yet been established, Reuters reported.

A person can be found guilty of a felony under Michigan Law for "failure to or refusal to supervise the final disposition of a dead human body" more than 180 days after a funeral, ABC News reports.

"Perry Funeral Home has been serving the Detroit community for decades and has been a reputable, reliable and caring member of the community". In some cases, the home embalmed remains without the knowledge or consent of the families, the department said.

"I hope this is isolated to these two", Craig said.

Police were tipped off regarding issues with the funeral home by a parent involved in a civil suit over the improper burial of a child, the paper said.

"If our class action gets certified, we will make every effort to identify every single one of those fetuses" that had been improperly handled by Perry, and to track down the parents, Parks said.
