Khashoggi murder 'must concern us all': Mattis to regional forum

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman

Saudi Arabia will not extradite suspects in the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the kingdom's Istanbul consulate, the Saudi foreign minister said.

Hatice Cengiz, who is Turkish, also said in an interview on Turkish television channel HaberTurk on Friday (local time) that she continually asks herself questions about October 2, the day that Khashoggi entered the consulate and was killed by officials there.

As gruesome details continue to emerge about Jamal Khashoggi's murder, the politics obscuring the truth around the journalist's death have been largely hidden from public view.

Khashoggi, 59, who had lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since 2017, was not seen again after entering the consulate to obtain paperwork for his marriage to his Turkish fiancée Hatice Cengiz.

Saudi officials also admitted this week that those agents plans to murder Khashoggi - who has been critical of the Saudi kingdom - was "premeditated".

"With our collective interests in peace and unwavering respect for human rights in mind, the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in a diplomatic facility must concern us all greatly", Mattis said, indicating the issue could have potential ramifications for the USA relationship with Saudi Arabia.

Al-Jubeir's claims of an over-reaction echo the reported response of Saudi Arabia's crown prince, Mohammed bin Salman, to criticism of the killing.

Otherwise "we should take individual sanctions against those responsible", Macron suggested.

"This issue has become fairly hysterical", Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir said.

Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel al Jubeir says Jamal Khashoggi case has sparked "media hysteria" and that investigations take time. I think people have assigned blame on Saudi Arabia with such certainty before the investigation is complete.

Austria has exported no military equipment to Saudi Arabia since it began its bombing campaign, she said.

In interview with Turkey's Habertürk TV, Cengiz, who is a Turkish national and doctoral student, said of Trump's invitation, "I perceived it as a statement to win public favor". "We do. Tomorrow is another day", he said.

He also said Saudi authorities had staged the "worst cover-up ever" over the case. The Saudi leadership has pushed responsibility down the chain of command.

The U.S. needs Saudi Arabia in order to maintain what Mattis described as "twin imperatives" in the region - working with Saudi Arabia to stop Yemen's civil war and to get it to increase its role in Syria to relieve demands on the U.S. - while simultaneously seeking justice for the murder, Mattis said.

He urged Riyadh to reveal who ordered the killing and the whereabouts of Khashoggi's body.

In June of previous year, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Bahrain collectively severed ties with Doha, accusing it of supporting terrorism.

Cengiz said she waited outside the consulate for Khashoggi for more than 10 hours. "But his statements were at very short intervals and they were contradictory".

Jubeir said recent discussions in Saudi Arabia about a framework for MESA included Qatari officials and that the proposed alliance would not be affected by the diplomatic row.

"It is not that we don't have any other information or documents".
