Warner walk-off after 'hurtful' sledge by Phil Hughes' brother

David Warner storms off mid-innings after receiving grade cricket sledge

David Warner's wife, Candice Warner, has revealed more details about the incident that saw him walk off the field midway during his innings in a Sydney grade cricket match on Saturday.

Playing for Randwick-Petersham against Western Suburbs, Warner left the field when on 35.

Warner previously opened up about the tragedy on 60 Minutes, saying at the time: "When I got home after that day I was standing in the shower and I was sort of facing the wall with my hands on my head going: "Why".

While playing for Randwick-Petersham against Western Suburbs on Saturday, Warner was reportedly sledged by Jason Hughes, brother of Phillip, the former Aussie batsman that tragically died in 2014 after being struck by a bouncer during a Sheffield Shield match.

"He left the field because first of all he didn't like what he was hearing and where that could have been taken", Candice told the Nine Network's Sports Sunday. It was very hurtful'.

The incident comes ahead of the expected release by Cricket Australia on Monday of an independent report into the culture of the Australian national body and its possible influence on the ball-tampering scandal. "Cricket Australia reinstate the legend", tweeted Dan Stapleton.

Panellist Peter FitzSimons grilled Ms Warner over the debacle, asking if her husband was "the last person who can complain about vicious sledging".

"Everyone has their opinion but I think there is a difference between sledging and abuse".

David Warner briefly suspended his innings in a club match having appeared to be barracked.

"David is very passionate and he is an aggressive player, that's why he is one of the best players in his position, because he is aggressive", Candice rebutted.

What was said yesterday went too far.

CA board member and former test captain Mark Taylor said the game needed to move on from the ugly chapter. Yes David and I have had disagreements about how things have been handled in the past, but sooner or later everyone in cricket has got to get over it.

"We have to move on".
